Handicap certificates at courses - GM reviews

I've not got an official one and if I think one is needed I have a fake one just in case.

Only place I have been to that kind of properly asked for one was Woodhall Spa, but there were 3 of us and the person they asked did have an official one and after they saw his they didn't bother asking me. And the thing was on the 1st tee with the starter watching I hit the best drive by a long way, which was funny

Fake certs are easi;y sused by clubs now. The three courses I went to who insisted ask for CDH numbers which will soon give them the info required as to whether you:

a: belong to a club.
b: have the required handicap

Had to produce a cerificate a few times. St Andrews, Sunningdale, and Parkstone required one.

when you played at st Andrews did you have to show a proper cert from your club? or did you use a English Golf Union card (type thing) which they can check online to see your handicap?

When I played in July we just showed them our phones logged in to englandgolf page.

Muirfield insist on one, though only once as they keep it 'on file'.

Royal Birkdale also - I had to get mine faxed through as I had forgotten it.

St Andrews Old might have, though I can't remember actually being asked. It was after having 'camped out' on a couple of the occasions and I think I carried a card then anyway - before the CDH days.

Wentworth definitely does for The West.

First time I played we had to produce passports as well as certificates. We just showed handicap certificates which we could download off our club website. Must admit I always carry a certificate just in case.

Since when has Royal Ascot been a traditional links seaside course somewhere on the East Coast of England?

in another 50 years, with global warming and rising sea levels it'll be a nice links course on the banks of the middle thames estuary ;)

Blimey......I've played pretty much all these courses that have been mentioned and I've never been asked for mine.

Even played West Sussex yesterday and the Pro looked at us and said straight away "Go off the back tees" :D

Guess I look like a golfer :ears:

Did the Pro have a white stick, and a dog ?:D

Beer gut and clothes that even Rupert Bear would think twice about wearing?

It's been said, many state on the website they are required. In reality very few ask for them. Give them a ring and tell them your not a club member but can knock it round ok.

I've only ever been asked for one twice. Only once in the UK @ st enodoc.

I feel another trip down there coming on after watching the new mark crossfield course log

I'll probably enter the mens open their next year. £35 for 2 rounds! should be in the black friday sales!!

My original point was really simple.

I don't want to play where I'm not welcome. Please could GM say in reviews what the policy is about visitors playing without handicap certificates? Are we welcome or not.

If people choose to fake them, try and get away with it, rely on not being asked, then that's fine and up to them.

But I'd like the policy to be up front and obvious, so I know whether I'd be welcomed.

I don't mind clubs saying that they are required. I'd just like to easily be able to find out before ringing, or looking at (hunting on) their website.

I've been asked on very few and far between occasions. The last time was at The Lamborne and I was only there to play a Nike knockout. The opponent hadn't told me but I always carry one from my club when playing these sort of events.
