I'm thinking of joining a local club which has a half way house. The course is really nice but I have my doubts about stopping for refreshment half way round. Do you guys have any thoughts on it?

I personally dont like halfway houses as they tend to slow down play unless the 10th is a par 3 or drivable par 4. Could be a good thing to as if your soaked to the skin by the 10th you can easily sit inside and forget your round and have a few drinks. :)

Wouldn't be high on my list of priorities. There are a few great ones about and I guess as long as your partners are happy to stop midway round and you let the groups behind through they are no bad thing. There's a great one at Leatherhead and Wokefield. At my club you can call the kitchen from the 8th tee (yes you can use your mobile for that) and pre-order a bacon sarnie etc for collection as you walk around to the 10th tee. You can also do the same from the 17th tee if you want to get your end of round grub on order

Yes, I guess they have both good points and bad points...when I'm playing well (rarely) I just like to get on with it. It's certainly not a selling point for me but I don't feel strongly enough for it to put me off joining the club. :D

I can see the good and the bad..

They do slow play down but I've played at courses where the done thing is to let the group behind through if you wish to stop and they don't. Also, they're great in the winter for a warming cup of tea.

I've played at one course where there was a phone on the 9th tee. You rang through with your order and it was ready for you as you walked through to the 10th tee. If you wanted to stop and eat then fine - the group behind goes through or, you could eat/drink and walk.

I wish my club had one so I guess I'm all for them..

We don't need a half way house at our course as you walk right past the clubhouse on the way to the 10th. Always stop for a choccy bar and in the cold winter months usually a hot coffee - luvverly! You can order food at the 9th tee but nobody seems to bother. The 10th is a par 3 and often have to wait, so popping in clubhouse doesn't hold people up.

If I go to another course anytime for a social round and there's a halfway house, will always buy something and like to see them. After all a friendly round is always more relaxed and less pressure to get round. Makes a change IMO.

Golfmmad.

What course are you hoping to join Ian? Cant think of many Ayrshire courses apart from Turnberry that has this facility???

Ours is great if I'm playing socially, luvverly bacon sarnie and cup of tea.

But on a Medal Day, I dont like stopping if I have a good card going, it breaks the rhythm and concentration.

At the weekend we have a little hut on the path to the first, which is also the path from 9 to 10.

You can order food before you tee off, then collect it after 9, but it's just like a garden shed so there's no real delay, just grab your food, drink, and eat it on the way up the 10th.

I used to think I wasn't bothered about it, but now I miss it when it's closed.

Organised quite a big charity golf day at a course in Bromley a couple of months ago. There is a halfway house after the 9th green.

After a 10 min stop there for a bacon/sausage/cheese sarnie and cup of tea in the company of the lovely Jackie, there were very few good drives on the 10th. People were complaining that they had stiffened up a bit during the break :o :o

You want to play Cooden. 3 girls in the canteen, all under 20, blonde and gorgeous. You'll be stiff for the whole back nine

They're ok as long as those who stop don't expect to be able to push back into the flow without waiting - not fair on those who havn't stopped.
Agree with the stiffening problem - legs ands shoulders, not anything else! - I like to keep going to maintain a rhythmn.

They have them on both courses at Archerfield, you are obliged to stop for 10 minutes.I dont like them.OK to pick up a quick coffee and a roll, but having to stop for 10 minutes is annoying.

At my course it's part of your round and the un-written rule is that people stop at the halfway house. The next hole after it is a long par 3 so the group at the HWH wait until the tee is clear and move on. Not something i was previously used to but given all who play the main Saturday comp use the HWH it's not a problem and better than being stood on a tee waiting for the group in front to tee off.
