Had enough! Of fairway woods,oh and this damn rain!

So following on from a thread a while back I have been practicing with my 3 wood and trying a few of them out as well as some 5woods,some deep faced some shallow faced. I have come to the conclusion that other than tee shots a mid handicapper short arse should not attempt to play these off the deck,I mean I'm not that old but I remember drivers being 43" and having similar size heads to current 3 woods,and tbh nobody would try and hit those off the deck so why now? The success rate is prob 50/50 so I can see a ton of. Leaked shots from this bumping up my score.
so I managed to pick up an Adams super S hybrid at 15 degrees on ebay with a 41.5" shaft,to me that's a manageable length to hot off the deck,sand probably long off the tee as well.
Oh and with this bloody rain would go away!,

Loving using the 5wood off the fairway right now, seems like I've added a new club to the bag since I managed to start hitting it successfully.... most of the time (directional issues aside)

although my driver and 5w both have the same length of shaft at 43

I use a 5w off the tee and fairway, I find it worthy of its space in the bag due to its versatility. I have dropped the 3 hybrid, which in my mind is basically a 2 iron in disguise. I never used to carry a 2 iron (1 iron yes for the links courses) so I am back to my old bag lay out. I carry a driver, a strong 3w and 5w and then a 4 hybrid and irons from 5 to PW plus 52,56,60 degree wedges. My strong 3wood is the goto club on tee, my driver is for par 5s and long 4s, I don't play the 3wood off the fairway as I think the 5wood would be nearly as long but more controllable. However off the tee the 3 wood is longer, really the driver is the club that isn't used that much.
I think realistically you have to decide what clubs give you the maximum distance that you can control, I know my 5 wood is pretty reliable but my 3h wasn't. I also view it simply if the pin is more than 230 yards away I am taking 2 shots to get there. Most short par 5s will have a lot of protection from the long second shot so laying up and popping in a wedge or short iron is more productive.

I think realistically you have to decide what clubs give you the maximum distance that you can control, ..... I also view it simply if the pin is more than 230 yards away I am taking 2 shots to get there.

Agree with this. On a long 5, if there's enough room I'll bring out the 3 wood for my second shot. When I try to go for the green with it, I ruin the shot as I'm trying to swing too hard. It's much better to think about knocking a wood into a large, safe area leaving you a little wedge into green. Knowing your 'miss' (right or left) is very important too when using the longer clubs I reckon.

I've been enjoying my golf much more recently by only going for the green if I had less than 150 yards to go. That is, of course, unless the green isn't well protected.

Really? thought it was standard for the cobra s2 and doesn't seem long (and I'm not a tall guy hence why I got my driver cut)

I have qualms pulling a 5W out to play even if the fairway is sodden. Same with a 3H and it depends on the shot and distance. I wouldn't usually pull a 3W as the percentages of me pulling the shot off especially in winter are too low to warrant the risk. If I had hit the fairway on a short par 5 or a longer par 4 and I could tee it up nicely but it wasn't a comp I'd be tempted. In summer off a firmer fairway I would. It is back to that old chestnut course management and what works best for you and how to get it around in the fewest shots
