Good evening,my first post on this forum and would like some advice if possible on an incident at my club today. The 17th hole is currently in the process of being remodelled and about half way to the green an old tee is currently being dug up and consequently has been declared as GUR.I generally lay up on this hole and tried to do so today but unfortunately hooked my tee shot, which duly went into the GUR area. All well and good [or bad actually:D] and i've seen it happen before with the normal outcome of the usual drop procedure. However,my shot today must have hit a stone or other object within the GUR area and rebounded high over a hedge which borders it to the left, which meant that i had gone out of bounds. What would the ruling on this be,bearing in mind that if the GUR area had not been there,my ball would not have gone out of bounds-is there a set ruling on this type of incident or would it be a question of a local ruling being applied [i didn't have time to discuss it with any club official today]? Would be very grateful for any thoughts on the issue.

Welcome to the forum

Basically, you are just unlucky and your ball is OOB and its 3 off the tee time, the fact that it got there via the GUR is not relevant from a rules perspective

Welcome to a situation that comes under the banner. "Rub of the green"

Rules of Golf: Definitions said:
A "rub of the green" occurs when a ball in motion is accidentally deflected or stopped by any outside agency (see Rule 19-1).

Equally the ball could have rebounded back out and down the fairway and it would have been fine.

I remember thinning a ball over a green and out of bounds only for it to hit a tree and bounce back on to the green for an easy putt to half the hole. I certainly thought that was fine but the only thing in common with "fine" in what my opponent said was the first letter.

Thanks for the welcome and the replies. I thought it probably would be 3 off the tee but worth a try anyway. Suppose the best way would be not to put the darn ball anywhere near the GUR in the first place.

There are only two* safe places on any hole. On the tee and in the hole. Everywhere else is a potential minefield.

* And anywhere on the 19th.
