Gross Prize in a Stableford Competition!

This doesn't make sense. You don't have a gross number of points because there's no such thing as a net number of points, ergo the distinction isn't made. And since it is scored from your handicap I'd still say it was closer to net than gross if anything. Either way I think you're barking up the wrong tree.

Gross Stableford means the points you score on a hole without your handicap adjustment

I understand that he means that now, I just had no idea why. I've never heard of this being a thing. I also don't think it's what the OP was talking about (could be wrong there though I guess).
