groove sharpeners on vokey

I'm sure amateurs now need to use clubs with grooves that conform to the rules also

They do, and the rules should be adhered to, but how on earth would anyone check?

Nope. All clubs sold as new should now be conforming to the new rules when bought. But amateurs have until 2024 to ensure the equipment in their bag is conforming .... so if you have a nice stash of old style groove clubs then your good to go for another 10 years, or you have to buy up all the good 2nd hand stock quickly.

I stand corrected, but we're talking I believe about a Vokey SM4.

Plus, surely it would still have to conform with the old specs?

There are still rules regarding depth and width of grooves. The 2014 thing is a vhange to them.
Using a sharpener is fine as long as you don't exceed allowed dimensions.
If you can't measure how much you haave changed the groove by sharpening it then you sbouldn't be doing it.

Rule 4-1b provides that:

A club that conforms with the Rules when new is deemed to conform after wear through normal use. Any part of a club that has been purposely altered is regarded as new and must, in its altered stated, conform with the Rules.

indeed

and sharp edges to grooves are definitely not conforming - the specification of the radius required is very specific

manufacturers go to great lengths to ensure that clubs conform - just!

last I heard (anecdotally) even the tour vans stick a new head on rather than attempting to 'refresh' the groove profiles for their players
