What is the difference between lawn sand and general building sand? Is there a selection of additives in the lawn sand?
Apart from the use of chemical spraying, what is the best way of moss removal?

Many thanks. Greensmen....the unsung heroes of good golf courses. Max respect to you and your profession.

Sorry, I didn’t make that clear. Lawnsand is a fertiliser, containing ammonium sulphate & iron sulphate. Moss hates this stuff and the grass loves it. You only need one 20kg bag for 350sq m and you can get this from any gardening store, it’s also very inexpensive. It will need to be applied properly and evenly to avoid scorch so I recommend purchasing a fertiliser applicator if don’t already have one.

Very interesting thread. I actually think on the whole our greenstaff do a damn fine job. What a lot of our members forget is that although the course was built amongst old woodland and so appears to have been there for a while, it is only a five year old course. Greens are still settling, drainage issues are still coming to light and need fixing and that there is a general level of remedial work to ensure the course continues to develop.

We do seem to have an inssue this year with rabbits burrowing into the faces of some of the bunkers and at the bases of some of the trees that were planted a few years ago and a proliferation of moles on most holes which is a nuisance and of course spoils the look.

I always try and compliment the staff I see on the way round when the course is looking good as it is at the moment with all the fairways trimmed etc. Its easy to be critical from the 19th with a limited knowledge.

went to play the medal (badly) on Wednesday and found quite a change in the greens. they seem to have a new cutter that leaves a closer, diamond pattern, finish. to me it's changed the way the greens play in a very short time, I think they are a bit quicker, smoother and the reacts to borrows a bit differently.

is all this possible just with a change of mower?
