I played in our members guest day at Ascot with Sneds yesterday and I had a great day (and I hope he did too). We met about 9.00 and went out to play a few holes. I think he got a shock when I said we're off the whites when he saw our first hole. I didn't exactly fill him with confidence as I smacked my opening drive way right never to be seen again.

The greens had been especially prepared to showcase the course and were running at nearly 11 (according to the head greenkeeper today) but were a real shock. I putted on the 2nd and thought I'd judged it well and it ran 5 foot putt. Care was needed. We ended up playing 13 holes before heading back for some lunch before the main event.

The afternoon was 4 ball better ball off full handicap and we started on 13. Sneds made a nett par and I did the same at the next. Our 15th is 478 yard par 5 and bearing in mind Sneds is off 24 and only carries a 3 wood he proceeds to hit it twice to find the green and calmly makes a birdie for four points. He must have scared himeself as he had a few iffy holes after that and I did my best to carry him (not a role I'm familiar with). He rallied on the front nine though and in the end we had 42 points. It was respectable but 46 won.

We had a lovely meal and then it was time for the prizes. There was nearest the pin on the par 3 6th for members and I'd managed to nudge the marker nearer with my effort but never thought it would be good enough (about 10 feet) so I was chuffed to win it. My day was rounded off nicely when I snaffled a 4 ball voucher to play at Windlesham in the raffle. My golf was erratic but the day was great.

Sneds is a great young golfer who hits it miles (sounds familiar) with his 3 wood and he's a solid iron player. He will be much lower than 24 and needs to trust in himself a little more and maybe get more confidence around the green. However that said, he was brilliant company on and off the course and helped make it a great day and I'm looking forward to playing with him again.

Sounds good, always nice to win something whether by luck or design.

I presume the club make a local rule for the day to allow visitors a chance to play a few holes? Good idea if it is.

Sounds like a good day Homer, and nice to win a prize.

Looking for a mate to play Windlesham ? :D :D :D :D :D

The Windlesham voucher is valid until 30th June next year so I'm probably going to wait for the nice summer sunshine. No doubt I'll put it up for offer on here so if you want to PM me nearer the time I'm sure we can get something sorted. Out of interest where do you play?

Just like to reiterate what Homer said; the day was a very enjoyable one. The course was in absolutely fabulous condition and despite being petrified when I first putted, the morning 13 holes really helped me gauge the speed. It was a pleasure to have the opportunity to putt on such fine greens.

Homer was a great host and I was delighted that he picked up the closest to pin, which was a gorgeous shot, a lovely high hybrid drawing in from the right.

Thanks for the day Homer.

Blackmoor,Hants, and available any day next year.

Played it once and really enjoyed it. Colt design ??

Would love to play it again. What day next year would suit?? :D :D

Yes a Colt design, features in the recent book 'Creating Classics, the golf courses of Harry Colt'.

Happy to show off the course at any time. Perhaps get a four ball together with some forummers ?

Is Sneds the new HTL??!! :D

Glad you had a good day and well done Homer on nearest the pin. Greens running at 11? Thought they were pretty quick for our longest day challenge! Good job they weren't at 11 then otherwise we may not have made it round in time!!!

Good idea that, being able to play a warm up before you go out,not many clubs do that I bet.A quick 9 is a great idea for the guest and I applaud Ascot for allowing this on what is really a fun day anyway I pressume.

Cant say i agree with being able to play on a course before a comp.as not everyone in will be able to go out for a practice it would give a undue advantage to those who do.

If you had a practice on our course before a comp. you would be d/q.I thought this was a rule for all clubs, but perhaps this was a local rule.

I just think it is nice for the visitor especially, if like our invitation day ,it is a bit of a fun day and nothing too serious.

Presume it must be a special dispensation for the day.

Rule 7-1b. Stroke Play

Before a round or play-off on any day of a stroke play competition, a competitor must not practise on the competition course or test the surface of any putting green on the course by rolling a ball or roughening or scraping the surface.

When two or more rounds of a stroke play competition are to be played over consecutive days, a competitor must not practise between those rounds on any competition course remaining to be played, or test the surface of any putting green on such course by rolling a ball or roughening or scraping the surface.

Exception: Practice putting or chipping on or near the first teeing ground before starting a round or play-off is permitted.

PENALTY FOR BREACH OF RULE 7-1b:

Disqualification.

However:

Rule 33-2c. Practice Ground

Where there is no practice ground available outside the area of a competition course, the Committee should establish the area on which players may practise on any day of a competition, if it is practicable to do so.

On any day of a stroke play competition, the Committee should not normally permit practice on or to a putting green or from a hazard of the competition course.

So it seems to be ok if allowed by the committee.

It was suppose to be a fun day at wasn't a qualifier. The invitation was open to ALL pairings and so whether they took the offer up was their choice. From our perspective it was ideal as James got to play the front nine (and we carried on and played until the 13th where we were starting).

I agree that in the normal run of things playing on the course would be a D/Q but in this event it was to try and help first timers at least get a feel for the place.

I think that the aim of this is to cover situations like at my club. We have no seperate practice area, so, we have a part of the course where short game practice, and a different part where longer irons etc can be used that (until recently) were inbounds ie part of the course. You could practice on either before a strokeplay event but you definitely couldnt play on any of the greens, tees or fairways on the course.

At the end of the day it was all about social golf, getting a few punters in and getting money into the club with a few decent prizes and a cup at the end of it. No-one took it seriously (although they were competitive) and it was more about reliving the bad shots. Think of it as a glorified society do.

Well done on hitting a good shot and winning a prize Homer, but even if it was a "fun" day as there were prizes anyone who had a practice before still had a advantage on those who didnt.

How many played on the day? and what percetage got a chance to practice?

imo if you beat me to a prize and had a practice before hand and i never got a chance to practice i would think that unfair.

Not having a go at you but just making a general point.
