I am considering purchasing a GPS system. What is the experience of othere members' and what recommendations would anyone make please. Budget is probably £200 maximum.

Most people would recommend SkyCaddie but there are a few around that are viable alternatives.
Only problem with SkyCaddie (for some people) is the annual charge for downloading courses. Some offer them cheaper, some even offer them free.
I have the SkyCaddie 2.5 and find it OK...but am finding I am using it less and less nowadays. It's superb on links courses where there are no trees etc. to get a good perception of distance, but on tree lined courses which have marker posts I am not even bothering to use it.
I had it switched on at Leatherhead on Sunday, but think I only glanced at it once!

For that you should be able to get the S.G 2.5 with all the attachments. it's the basic model that only gives you distances which is all that is allowed in comps i think the downloads cost you £30 per year.

There are people on here that have the all singing and dancing versions of this and other models, im sure they will be on soon to advise.

I've got the SG5 but in all honesty I would have gone for the 2.5 if it wasn't bought for me as a present, they do exactly the same things.

I find it to be 1st class, I use it all the time when permitted and it's become part of my pre shot routine. The positive confirmation of how far I do (and do not) want to hit it is helping me plot my way round the course better.

Simple, get the SkyCaddie. The best one (model) you can afford. You only buy it once, so get the best you can as it will last years.

FYI, I have had one - the SG4 - for 6 months and use it all the time. The best, and I mean the BEST, investment in my hobbie I have ever made.

I bought the SG4 instead of the SG5 because other than colour it has all the same features. The extra money for a color screen was not in my opnion good value.

Good luck.

Another SC vote from me I'm afraid. I don't begrudge paying the £30 fee to download all the courses. A feature not always recognised is that if you are a signed up member and your machine is lost or knicked SC can then put a block on it making it useless to anyone else. Peace of mind if nothing else.

I've been looking at a few of these, and the only thing that might affect my decision is seeing one that doubles as an in-car sat. nav., which I think I'd find useful. Was £300 though...can't remember the make, but I'm searching...

Why restrict your functionality to golf?

I have a Garmin etrex which I bought for £120 which I use for golf, skiing, walking and cycling. I can mark every hazard/green/tee on Google earth and download into the unit from my PC. It's spot on, I choose what I want to mark, no ongoing costs. I set the series of points to be a track, so the unit automatically picks up the next one in line. I don't have to touch it from the first tee.

Works for me.
