I all,
In got a call today with my handicap. I'm off 24 for my summer handicap which translates to a 21(medal) and 16(stableford) for the winter. I failed to add in a previous post that I had played at my club 4/5 years ago so they have my handicap from then along with the 3 cards entered over the last 3 weeks.
So my aims are;-
1:- to get down to a 15 summer handicap
2:- to win a weekly comp
3:- to win a board comp
4:- finish in the top 20 forthe order of merit at the end of the year

Now I know I can shoot sub 90 on the summer course and have had a +7 on the winter cousre so hopefully I can forfill these aims or maybe better. Roll on Friday/Saturday for my next game!

Some clubs operate a shorter course in the winter. Though ultimately its the scoring that matters especially if the comps are non qualifiers.

Your winter handicap is something like 8/9 of your summer handicap due it being on a shorter course. It's not me making this up, but it does make sense having a shorter handicap for a shorter course.

Bob,I understand what your saying but have never ever heard of anyone having 2 h/caps,if the course is shorter in the winter all well and good, you benefit from it...

I didn't say anything about 2 handic..........oops, you weren't talking to me were you ;)

Perhaps we had better call you 'Big Bob', 'Old Bob', or so there is absolutely no confusion 'Big Old Bob'. ;)

I need a new book    ;)

The local course i was a member at last year runs a winter League and they run a winter handicap which only counts for the winter course, which is all winter greens and 4 or five of the holes are half the distance. You had a load of old timers playing four times a week and putting cards it and some where 26 handicap in Summer and 9 for the winter.

Ive been playing for 2 years, and just finished my first full season as a member at a club. Handicap is currently 22, went down to 21 and back to 22 at end of the season. Been doing some serious work over the winter, my biggest problem was off the tee, having played sporadically over the years I had the fundamentals down and before the end of the season I was beating friends who had been playing for about 10 years!

I never seen any significant drop in handicap all season though, after a few lessons Ive strengthened my driver grip and my set-up which at the range at least, has made a world of difference. Ive gained great yards and almost got rid of that slice that was costing me so badly last year. Just got a set of burner 2.0, man, the difference with these clubs is scary.

My aim is to get to 19 or lower before the end of this season.

Our club has a comp every week, and 99% of them are qualifiers, and they are played over the same distances as the summer.Obviously the course will play longer even with the help of winter rules. Why do some clubs suspend handicaps in the winter, when ours operates all year round?

Best of luck mate, hope all your aspirations for the season come true! ;)
Just don't beat yourself up if they don't.

No idea about having two handicaps. If the course is shorter surely its just a non-qualifier and your club handicap stays the same whether you have a good or bad or bad round.

Good luck with the targets but the aim is to enjoy it. It's taken me a long time to realise that but don't get too focussed on the handicap or winning and particularly don't go off and dedicate hours of practice in the summer unless you've had a lesson or need to work on one specific. I did that a few seasons back and it realy set me back the next year too. Now I just want to play as often as I can
