Hope you get the best from it Andy. You'll be amazed when your playing partners just happen to wander past your bag for a sneak peak whilst "stretching their legs" :)

as far as i'm aware it's just a question of pressing a button before you tee off and then pressing it again when you get to your ball = readout and to the best of my knowledge they all do that but don't quote me on it.

I'm going to download the pdf manual for one and have a good poke around. If I find out the above is not the case i'll post again,

bill

p.s. Homer - I think courses that haven't been mapped can be flagged up to the respective companies via their websites and a request made for a 'survey' made.

isnt it odd by the way, that my brand new tom tom only cost £108 with every road and speed camera in the uk on it, yet these things cost more without even a map on them. you can then double or treble the price for ones with a map...

PPPT, sat nav is old hat now and I paid £350 for a Garmin Quest 3 years ago and they are now buttons. How much was your 1st vijo recorder? You can get them for £30 new now.

You can map out your own course with some devices if they are not already mapped.

buy it with the readys you get. ;)

good call

just for the record ive had a quick gen up on the pdf and checking your distance is done by pressing a 'mark' button and then pressing it again once you get to your ball.

M's will probably do the same.

One little feature that ive just remembered that did annoy me a little was the fact that as soon as you start hovering round the side of a green where the next tee is it thinks youve moved on. Not that this matters a jot but it was a bit annoying. Anyway- it turns out to be a preference that you can switch off at will. Didn't know that at the time as I was too scared to play with it much in case I ended up breaking it or sending my inside leg measurement to Bill Gates by pressing the wrong key at the time :D

Madandra- if it's not too bold I would be interested to know how your perception of your tee shot distances measure up against the facts once you've had a chance to have a play with it?

I found even on clean strikes my embedded idea of how far I hit it was well off the mark- usually by around 20 yards.

Other thing is if it will measure how far youve walked point to point. Ive often thought of taking a pedomitor out to do this as by the end of a weekends' golf i'm feeling it and wondered how many miles I might have walked.

Ive got a Garmin Quest which I bought for my motorbike travels years ago and I paid a lot for it- now - not worth the plastic it's wrapped in. such is life

A request can be made but not all courses will allow the companies to Map their courses,in my experience club pros were happy for it to be done despite some having reservations that the sales of strokesavers may be hit (utter crap) but secretarys seem opposed to it and I could only put that down to them possibly being the stereotypical old fart that is so often an office bearer at clubs up and down the country.......'a computer to help you on the golf course??!!Whats wrong with using ones eyes or these new fangled yardage chart things they seem to use nowadays?' was a common response!!

Anyone tried any other versions of these GPS Systems. Would be interested to hear some more opinions as not the sort of thing that you can take out and try easily but I am liking the idea of them.

Billy, basically the guys who mapped these course were given a remit of standing on each green thus automatically giving you the distance from ech tee. Hypodermically, you could walk backwards to the car park and it will just increase the distance. There is also the added feature of distance to things like bunkers/ditches and water.

Much has already been said but a few points.

Legality - yep as long as the committee make a local rule. Would be interesting to see how many mapped courses have done so. For example, practically every course down my way is mapped - have they all made local rules permitting use in comps?

Speed of use. Been said - easy peasy; you just look at it.

Mapping your own course. Easy enough to do technically, but a bit of a pain in the erse. Especially if you want to do front, middle & back of green. You have to run about like a blue ersed fly, try not to disturb your mates too much and try not to hold up the group behind. Better to do it while the course is closed if you can. Or at least quiet. Not sure I'd bother again - specially as the only course I've mapped got done by the company within a few weeks of me doing it myself.

But overall? wouldn't be without it now.

Backy, you don't have to map the middle of the green as the system will automatically do it once it has the front and back references.

I would have thought that the R&A's ruling accepting these systems would have meant an automatic inclusion onto the agendas of every AGM in the country. It will be frowned upon by those who are allergic to change but I am really looking forward to having it in my artillery.

Do the mapping of your own course early morning like 7am that way you do not get held up and madandra correct in saying you take point of ref at front of green then back of green dont do middle as it is done for you.No need to run around like a blue arsed fly it is all done by simply strolling the course...easy. ;)

madandra & dodger: mine is the Skycaddie SG2. You do the front, then the back, and then have to do the middle by standing where it shows you are equal distance from the first two. It doesn't do it for you automatically. If yours does, then its a good improvement...

Both caddy lite and sky caddy look great bits of kit. Sadly neither have my course mapped yet so I'll have to wait until they do. Caddy lite says it is already on their list of course waiting to be done. Hopefully by the time I can use it prices will have dropped.

In the meantime whatever make and model you have enjoy them you lucky b******s

Homer - get your wallet out, or start saving up. Royal Ascot is now in the list for Skycaddie ....

Been looking at the website listed on this thread and wondered if anyone has any experience of the Sureshot GPS. I know it is a more expensive option but it does appear to have a lot of bells and whistles including recording club distances, scores etc.
