Tour Winner
On Saturday I made an 8 on our 3rd (par 5) and followed this at the 7th (long par 4) with a drive just into the left hand clag and a provisional pushed right (talk about over compensating!) into some more clag. I honestly thought I'd find both as they were only on the edge of the deep stuff but neither were to be seen again. I elected to NR as being off 5 and having the prospect of (at least) another 8 had no chance in the comp (need at least -3 or -4 to qualify) and didn't want to slow my partners or the course down by taking the long walk back.
As my main aim this year is to be more consistent and grind out more buffer zones when not playing that well, I just converted my existing scores to stableford and carried on. I birdied the 8th and par'd the 9th for 16 points with the two blobs which gave me a realistic target of 19 points on the back 9 to get into buffer zone. This really got me motivated. I managed 20 points and I was actually thinking on the last couple of holes which are fairly easy par 4s that I may be able to get a cut. Ended up buffer zone and more than happy with the round despite it being an NR in the comp.
Point to all this is that there's been a few threads on here recently about NR's and there are people who say you should never, ever, NR. Or worse still, be banned for doing so etc. Sure, some go out just to get the 0.1 whatever but there are other ways of dealing with these players as the pattern becomes very apparent over time with computer systems etc. If more players realised that all is not lost after a couple of bad holes then I think many more would stay out there. End of the day just do what's sensible at the time and carry on. For me, this includes walking off with a few holes to go if you are having an absolute nightmare (so long as your partners are OK with it).
