Ive played 20yrs, at the same course, so I know what's 'in range' and whats not, particularly at my club, on my 1st Hole.
I was 'in range', no if's....no but's.......
These guys got impatient because I had 'filtered in', no if's......no but's......
It was 'dangerous'......No if's......No But's........

I'm going to be contrary here, I think you were both in the wrong,
they had told you they were nearly finished, 30 secs extra conversation would have established it as their last hole so it wouldn't have killed you to wait.
however, having teed off they should have given you sufficient space, and if you were waiting to play your second this they didn't do.
that said anyone can hit the once in a blue moon shot - I did last night, 230 - 240 with a 4h, never done that before.
