Good Friday Agreement

A lot of things stick in the throat about it but they are a price worth paying for the peace and lives saved. I agree with Doon, well done to those who pulled it off.

It was a very bitter pill to swallow on so many levels for the older generation but I was 15 at the time and very happy that it was finally achieved.

Why do I get the feeling this post has something to do with Jezzer!

Wouldn't be surprised if he was a/the conduit through which many of the advances/proposals were made. All power to him for his efforts if that was the case!

And a salute to a very special lady. Right Hon. Sec of State for Northern Ireland, Mo Mowlem.

Absolutely! A toss-up between her and Heseltine as my 'most respected' UK politician!

And some would say that Andrew Gilligan has been asked to put together a hatchet job. So Corbyn was on the editorial board when some other people wrote stuff Gilligan objects to in the paper? I hope he extends the same tenuous connection to letters published in the papers for which he writes.

Corbyn was a friend of Irish nationalism. That is not in dispute. He has already said that he spoke to the IRA. The UK Tory Government was doing exactly the same at exactly the same time, only secretly. Corbyn wanted to bring peace to NI and he knew that the only way to do that was to engage with the nationalists and IRA. Pity previous UK Governments hadn't reached the same conclusion sooner, instead of internment, Bloody Sunday and all the rest.

This has the whiff of Lynton Crosby on it, attacking Corbyn ahead of local elections which could destabilise Cameron even more.

Some would disagree with that sentiment:

Would that be folk who want(ed) reasonable peace and opportunity for all in Ireland?

If not, then I'm not particularly interested in their opinions - though I'll listen to their (perceived) grievances.

As for Andrew Gilligan... As an investigative journalist, his job was/is to find dirt and stir it up! He bears too much (though not 'most') responsibility for the death of Dr David Kelly for me to be a fan!
