This I hope will make a change from the usual bad stories on slow play or not allowing groups through.

I was out with my regular partner having nine holes this afternoon on the Montgomerie course at our place and walking down the hill to the fourth tee, a par 3, we see two three balls on there. The first three tee off and we could see they were not the best as only one of them got over the scrub in front of them, as we approached the tee one of the fellas just said straight away without a word from us to play through both groups as they were all together.

They were paying guests and some were obviously new to the game so we were very happy that they let us through.

When the course marshal passed us on the 7th hole I made a point of telling him how pleased we were with the etiquette of the two groups and asked him to pass that on to them so even if they weren't happy with their golf they could take some good feelings from playing.

I'm happy to let groups through if I'm at a course I don't know. I like to pop up to the green for a peek every now and then and I'd imagine as a 3 ball you could expect to add an extra hour onto your round if no one knows the course.

I'd like to see how long it takes to get round Celtic Manor... but no-one has invited me .....yet ;)

That's really refreshing to hear especially after some of the tales of woe and slow play. Good on you for taking the trouble to make sure the marshall knew too. Its only a small thing but it'll give them really positive fellings about the place and hopefully will entice them back again

Out of interest, do you get to play the 2010 course whenever you want?

I assume it's now closed even for members?

We don't get to play the 2010, my membership is for the Roman Road and Montgomerie courses, not bad at £1,100 a year for the two. It,s £3,000 to join the 2010 and £3,000 a year fees. Way out of my reach.

Anyone can book to play the 2010 if you are willing to pay the green fee, if we play with a 2010 member we will have a guest rate but that goes for anyone else as well. It is a good experience though. It's a tough course, a recent 4bbb comp was won with 34 pts.

The 2010 is still open for play, it will close before the Wales open and then about a month before the Ryder Cup.

The resort are doing some good stay and play deals, check them out. But do let me know if your passing this way.
