We'd like to take this opportunity to wish you a Happy Holidays and a very Merry Christmas from all at Golf Monthly. Thank you for sharing your 2025 with us!
much too much to live up to, your crown remains untarnished. I am but the gatekeeper, and if Sigourney Weaver is included in the fringe benefits, happy to remain so.
Think I've always had an interest in golf from an early age. My Grandfather used to play & there are pictures of me probably 40 years ago with a toy set ofclubs. little steel shafts plastic heads, all in a little tartan bag. Though its one of those toys that mysteriously disapeared. Which I think is/was a great shame.
My next minor foray was when my grandfather left a couple of old clubs at my parents. My Dad had started playing a couple of year prior & I'd just reach my teens. I remember taking those two clubs down to the recreation ground to hit a couple of old balls about, but of course as is usual in these sort of situations, my supposed mates, I supose in some form of missplaced envy, simply proceded to destroy those clubs for me... I was less than impressed & I doubt my parents were either to be quite honest, as I could have quite easily caught the bug there & then, if I'd have been given the proper opertunity.
A couple of years & a house move later I remember getting putting lessons from, you've guessed it, my Grandfather... seemed to have a knack for that, certainly at the time & I know not long after there was another missed opertunity at school to play at Cold Ashby during one cricket season, was very tempted, but I supose I feared the ribbing I'd have gotten from my mates.
I often wonder if I'd have made more of a nusance of myself with my parents making my wishes felt when I was yonger about wanting to play I might have been a better player than I am now. As its only been over the last 3 or 4 years that I've actually taken up the game. It's one of those things that you get tempted by at various points in your life but because of one thing or another you simply either let the whim pass, or get sidetracked before you get the chance to actually do the thing you know you want to do. Life has a lot to thow at us all. So many problems, so many job involvements, so many various relationships, holidays, financial concerns, family. The list goes on.
At certain times, certain things take pressidence over others. Infact golf has actually encompassed a great proportion of the last few years, to the detriment of certain other things. I supose, catching up for missed time, opertunity & youth... lol. So therefore, DIY around the home & a multitude of other things have gone perhaps a little further back in the pecking order. And even guitar playing & my other musical interests have been neglected, even if the interest is there.
Quite frankly this last month ironically is probably the least I've played the beautiful game in the last 3 or 4 years, as I try & start to catch up on one or two of many things I should probably have been doing in the last 3 or 4 years.
I think the thing that finally made my mind up 4 to 5 years ago to actually startplaying golf was. Actually it may have even been a little longer than that...lol. But I remember one very happy summer visiting my parents, having had a relaxing barbaque in the lzarge garden & somehow it was decided that we'd have a chipping & pitching competition, where we'd throw a ball out, bowels style into the garden & each take turns trying to pitch & chip a ball up close to the one we'd thrown out. The winner was the one that got to throw out the ball the next time. I remember winning the honour to do this numerous times that sunny afternoon. Was actually quite shocked to find out that my sister had tried playing golf, even though she had no real interest in playing... Ironic that. her clubs laying unwanted in the garage, along with her horse ridding helmet. Ironically it was my Dad that kept up the horseridding when she fell off for the umpteenth time breaking her arm & never got on a horse again since... Oh, that's another thing I'd have liked to have done, but never opened my mouth about, though tbqh, never had, or has the same apeal as Golf.
