Golfing Formats

Care to clarify? Are we talking fun like skins, 6's, Bingo bango bongo, on the perch, florida scramble, texas scramble, or proper golf as in matchplay, strokeplay, stableford, foursomes, greensomes, bogey, etc?

Which of he above need explanation?

Theres also the game of Gotchas".

High handicapper is allowed 2 Gotchas per round.
A gotcha is where the high handicapper tickles the low handicappers crown jewels. Best way to play is to use your first gotcha on the first tee--won't need to use the second.

Al right then,

In Bingo Bango Bongo, three types of achievements are rewarded with a point. The first player in a group to get his ball on the green gets a point (bingo). The player in the group whose ball is closest to the pin once all balls are on the green gets a point (bango). And the player in the group who is first to hole out gets a point (bongo).

Add up the points at the end of the game, high points wins.

Bingo Bango Bongo gives weaker players a chance to earn points because what matters is being first at something. For example, all members of the group tee off on a par-4. The player who hit the worst drive (farthest from the hole) plays first, and so has the first shot at winning the bingo point.

So, too, with closest to the pin. The best players in the group are likely to be on the green in two (or three on a par-5), while the weakest players might be chipping. The closest-to-the-pin point is only earned once all balls are on the green, so the player who has hacked it up the fairway may be sitting just off the green and chipping - giving that player a great chance to pick up the bango point.

Because of these factors (and because the first person putting will be the one farthest from the hole), strict etiquette must be enforced. The player who is away always plays first.

For a variation, throw into the mix that any player winning all three points on a hole wins double points.

Also Known As: Bingle Bangle Bungle

"Joker" Matchplay.....when two players are within a few shots of one another (h'cap 10 and 14 say), the higher player plays off 3/4 but can choose to take his shots on any hole...only stipulation is he must declare it before the hole is played.

Works nicely...best between mates probably...

Parmo

Greensomes is played in pairs were you can select either drive on any hole and then play alternate shots from there on.

Does that include putting?

Also can this be played in foursomes, I remember watching one of these comps and after the first shot the members took turns dropping their ball at the spot of the best shot or second shot?

I think I might avoid this type of comp for the time being lol.

Doh welcome back!
All sorts of strange formats too many to mention!
On a side note when we play fourball matchplay I tend to let the guys with a handicap of over 12 have double for their units (birdies, grittys, otters, woodys etc)as they are less likely to achieve these than single figure players......does anyone agree that is only fair? One guy not naming names but he posts on here and I play alot of golf with him isn't a fan of this....

Not sure if this was aimed at my post Parmo, but here goes just in case.

Gruesomes, is a reverse Greensome. Both drive off and then the opponents pick which drive you take and you play 4somes from there.

The comp you describe sounds like a Texas scramble to me??

All these are "fun" comps and not really officially recognised formats btw :D

Mono,
Here's a few examples of the more established formats:

4 ball better ball - played in pairs, you both use your own ball for the round but pick the best nett score on each hole.

Foursomes - played in pairs, you play alternate shots (including putting), and come out with one score for that hole.

Greensomes - played in pairs, you both drive, choose the preferred drive, then play alternate shots (including putts)

Gruesomes - as greensimes but opponants choose which drive you use.

Texas scramble - played in teams of 3 or 4, you all drive, choose the preffered one, then you all take a shot from where your chosen drive finished, then you take the best of those, and so on.

Most of the above will be played from reduced handicaps, but I can never remember which are 5/8ths and which are 3/4s.

Matchplay - played in pairs, or individually, against your playing partners. You win holes rather than coming out with best final score for the round.

Strokeplay - best score for the round wins, again in pairs or individually.

Florida scramble is like Texas, but the player whose shot was chosen as the position from which to play, doesn't get to play that shot, only the other members of the team. He then comes in for the shot after, and someone else drops out. It stops the single h/cap players ball being picked all the time.

For scrambles, there is normally an overrider, in that each players drive must be picked 4 times minimum.
