Morning all,

We have a new stay and play page going into each issue. I wanted to know what you lot looked for when you book up a golf weekend away.

What's most important? Location, driving range, buffet dinner, driving range, spa?

Would be really interested in what's most important for you.

Value for money (especially in the current climate) and a decent track. Sorry if that seems obvious!

Location isn't important as if I'm going "away" for a golf weekend, it usually means travelling, which is fine. Just as long as there's somewhere to eat and have a drink (or 6) in the evenings, it's all good

Good practice facilities would be a must for the golf side of things, so you can have a decent chance of warming up properly to give you a good shout at having an enjoyable round and enjoying your time there.

The spa would only be necessary if HID was coming along, so not really important :D

P.S. - I can recommend some good suggestions for Woodhall Spa, if you need it ;)

A good and interesting course, good restaurant, A good pro / starter, who can mix you in with other guests / players (I am often with the wife who doesn't play), a nice lounge area for the wife, and spa / swimming pool ditto. I like to be in an area of scenic beauty (that rules out Birmingham). Breakfast served early enough that I can eat before my tee time (shouldn't be hard, but often is). A good paractice area, particularly putting green is important. If no range, then a good quality set of nets, preferrably indoor ones.

A hotel room with plenty of space for drying wet kit comes in handy too.

First nd foremost though, the course needs to be interesting to play, and in good condition.

Everything within walking distance. Dont want to see my car till I have to drive home.
Don't want fancy posh cuisine, just wholesome well cooked food in a relaxed bar/restaurant.
Tee times booked and good courses.
25 deg with a gentle breeze too please. :)

Good drying facilities!

Like Bob, I'm more of a nice home cooked food man rather than fancy crap!

Interesting decent golf course(s) at a realistic price.

I'd look for at least 2 good courses, not too much travelling time (no more than 2 hours drive from the closest airport), decent nightlife, courses which aren't over-subscribed (prefer not to be pushed or held up),decent warm-up facilities and a realistic price.

Not too bothered about accomodation, as I'm only there to sleep.

Good course
Price
then in no particular order
Hotel that's geared to the golf (see 'breakfast')
Comfortable rooms
Good quality and variety of food
Sensible breakfast times (preferably not of the Belfry dried out buffet style)
well managed drying facilities
practice facilities accessible to the first tee

2 good courses which aren't going to be packed.

A comfortable bed! I don't need a suite or free minibar or TV on demand stuff or extras like that, as there to sleep, but the bed needs to be good! Decent food, but not michelin starred.

I never practice before a round, so that's not a consideration for me.

Spa on site, either for HID if she's with me or me if I fancy a massage after a round (metrosexual I know, but it's great).

So far, I can comment on East Sussex National (fantastic! Ticks every box!), Farthingstone (great for a budget trip), Tracy Park (super couple of courses and the hotels nice too) and The Essex (a bit basic but good value).

I'm off to Brocket Hall in June, so will feedback later.

Aside from the course, I want good, decent, honest facilities. I do not want to be paying £4-£5 a pint, I want good simple food not overpriced, over fancy food. Basically, the weekend and the golf costs enough so I do not want to be digging into my pocket for another £100 at night for food and drink.

Value for money
Intresting course
Decent bed
All within walking distance
Decent drying kit
Good beer

All above is in no particular order.

Decent course, decent bed, decent breakfast. Not too fussed about the hotel to be honest, I'll stay in B&B locally as long as the breakfast is top notch.
But for me it's the golf course. You could have the best hotel and food in the world but if the course is a goat track I won't enjoy my week-end away.
