I am traveling to the UK late April for a little over 2 months on a golfing holiday. I am traveling alone, I am spending a few days in London then driving to Ramsgate, then around the coast of Southern England and the Coast of Wales to Liverpool before returning to London and heading back to Australia. I want to play links courses and some cliff top courses for the scenery.

Are courses like Royal St. Georges 170 pounds to play, Twenty Ten 178 pounds to play, Royal Cinque Ports Golf Club 150 pounds, Royal Porthcawl 150 pounds, Rye Golf Club 125 pounds to play, really worth the money they charge with so many great looking courses in the 50 to 60 pound or under 100 pound price range.

If they are then that's okay but any advice would be great on these or any courses to play or not to play while I am there.

Thanks Chris

Hi Chris

I can really only talk to the courses around the North West and would recommend that you head a little further North than Liverpool and play Birkdale. Not cheap, but an open venue and certainly one of the best in the UK. If you stay around that area (Southport/ Formby) I'd also recommend you play Hillside (best back nine in the UK according to Greg Norman) and Formby. Hillside and Formby are a little less expensive than Birkdale but are truly superb courses.

Also, depending on your itenarary, when I last checked there was a space left for Woodhall Spa on our Forum society day . That is at the end of April and is a chance to play a great course and meet some UK golf nuts !! Check it out in the arrange a game section.

The courses you've listed are great, and there's a reason they cost so much. History rather than quality at times though.

Instead of Royal St. George's, you could play Princes, which is literally door, and a lot cheaper to play.

That's all I can advise as I don't play links golf very often, so can't comment on alternatives to the others.

You can also try to play Saunton links course, two good courses in devon-- i guess greenffe is around 90 pound and if you pass by when we are there in late april early may--you can play with us at guest rate. Burnham and Berrow in somerset is also worth a visit on your way up towards wales.

Have a nice trip

Hi Chris

Some of the courses are worth the money (assuming you have it) but some are not. RSG is a fantastic course and obviously an Open venue so can charge top dollar. RSP down the road isn't worth it, good course but you can play equal or better courses for less. Rye you will struggle to get on, it's very exclusive and requires an invite or get your secretary to write requesting if you can play, that is how I got on it.

When you get to Wales it is well worth playing Pennard which is a links but on top of cliffs so you get best of both worlds, very natural and rugged. If you are travelling around the coast then you should seriously consider St Enodoc in Cornwall, Saunton in Devon and Burnham & Berrow in Somerset, all absolute top quality links tracks. If you are passing through Hampshire then give me a shout and we can play at my club which is also a proper links and a very good test, see my signature below.

If you need anymore info give me a shout, I've played most of the good tracks in the areas you are travelling through
