Personally I use one, love it, wouldn't be without it. Mines a Skycaddie SC2.5 - no bells or whistles, overviews or colour screens just the info you need.

the golfshot app for iphone is brilliant. all the bells and whistles for 17 quid....

Same comment as Imurg. I have a Skycaddie 4 and also a Bushnell laser. I always use one or the other and wouldn't be without one

The short answer, is yes, they are very good, and most who have used one would not now be without it.
The two most popular models are probably Skycaddie and Sonocaddie. People will fight to the death over which one is best.
Phone apps are ok, but the phone battery will be poor, and the device not very robust for outside use.

I use the Golfshot Pro GPS app for the Iphone. I love it, and would miss it if i did not have it. not only is it great for distance but also keeps your stats so that you can see what you need to work on.
only down side is it uses allot of battery life.

turn off blue tooth
SC fan despite the annual fee. Does everything I want especially from places most people don't visit on the course. Plenty of previous debates so you can see how it polarises opinion. Alternatively I'm pretty sure there was a GM feature last month or the month before that which looked at most of the main players so that might give you a starting point

I use mine a great deal. I'm sure I play better with the confidence of knowing the yardages.
Apart from in the middle of the summer, I use the distance to the back of the green more than the middle.
Until yesterday, I'd played more than 90 holes of golf without going in a bunker.....I was off the back of a few greens, sure, but mostly the club for the back is the best club to hit *for me*.

For £17.99 it's a great app for getting round the golf course. Excellent value and fantastic capabilities.
It does use the battery quite a bit so turn off your Bluetooth and Wifi. Wifi does use a bit a battery anyway so it's good to turn off when not at home.
It's a great tool to have when on strange courses you have not played before.
I wouldn't say I'd hate to play without it but it's hard not to say it when you get to yardage markers and find out there 10yards out or the par 3 distances aren't correct.

I use my SC all the time even on my home course where I play 90% of the time. It really comes to the fore from 120 yards and in to help you pick the right club especially wedges to be able to attack the pin

i have the golf logix 8 which is plain and simple no.s no graphics but moves on holes without haveing to touch any buttons its best use is when i play courses other than my own

We've had countless debates on here regarding this and reading the R&A rules they basically say it's down to local rules on the course you play.

Think you are wrong Lostheplot.
The local rule either permits the use of a distance measuring device (DMD) or not.
Using an iphone (or other smartphones) as a DMD is a completely different case.
If you read the following from the R&A it may become clearer

My interpretation of point 3 is you can use the phone as a phone on the course or as a rule reference if you have the R&A rules app installed. This is even allowed if the device has other apps capable of measuring temp (weather) and direction (compass) on it.
As soon as you use the device as a DMD it is illegal if it has the other apps above installed on the phone even if they are NOT used.
As the iphone 3GS has a compass and weather apps that can’t be deleted they are illegal to use.
Still don’t think it is all that clear to be honest. Maybe it is something the mag can take up and highlight
