So, pro's are always tweeting about going to the gym (mainly to have massages) and it got me thinking, what sort of areas are good to work on.

I've been doing alot of running and leg work but thinking about toning up my upper body, only thing is if I do weights is it going to affect my swing? Will my clubs feel lighter?

What are your thoughts? What do you work on?

I'm new to golf but I have been hitting the ball very well recently and my arms are pretty big (17"). I was told they would affect my swing but I'm not convinced.

I guess my point is that my arms are pretty big and I'm ok, so a bit of gym work will be fine in my book.

Lol Bob!

To be honest I have found my swing has changed since I put on a couple of stone, started back on earnest today walking places that I would normally drive to (bathroom, kitchen etc!!), our local leisure centre is 15 mins walk away also so no point even driving when going there either. To be honest diet will be my biggest challenge as I can be as active as I ever was but eating the wrong muck won't help.
I reckon I have put around 4 inches on my waist and similar across the chest, when turning and trying to get the left arm as far back as possible straight, I can feel my chest getting in the way. Photos from the weekend just doubly confirmed what I was already thinking. It's gotta come back off again.

I can't do with all this "pro's in the gym rhubarb" they do it because golf is their job. I work in construction and TBH when I get home the last thing I want to do when I've finished MY work is go and sit on a bloody exercise bike for half an hour. I'm 48 most of the tour pro's are in their 20's or 30's. I'm porky but I can get round a course without too much bother, keep the gym.

As an ex-competing lifter, I think that the avarage man has more than enough strength to hit a golf ball a bloody long way. I believe that cardiovascular fitness will see you less fatigued at the end of a round and therefore less likely to lose shots due to tiredness or lack of concentration.
Our juniors are all built like stick insects and none of them come near 12 stones but they hit the ball for miles. The only time I think my strength helps is in thick rough or when I have a very restricted swing and just try to knob it forward with forearms/wrists.

Stamina has to be number one. I'd quite confidently say most gofers drop their shots coming towards the end of a round. If your body's tired, your mind is too.

I start to get that feeling around the 2nd these days...

Aside from the massages, the main bout of gym work that pros work on is preventing muscle imbalances in the key areas of a golfers body (Core, back, knees etc). By keeping the body free of muscle imbalances not only will it stay injury free, it will get stronger.

With pro's Playing/practicing 4-5 days a week, the same muscles are being used and put under a lot of stress so keeping the key areas strong and balanced is a must.

Not forgetting their flexibility/muscle balance

Very true Bob.

With Woods touted as the first real golf athlete, he's now mid thirties, has a completely knackered knee, that is inoperable, walks on crutches when he's not golfing, addicted to just about every drug (prescription or not), Steroid built, bad back, and gawd knows what else. Golf athlete, yeah right.

Its just a hit it, walk, find it, and hit it again game. Its not about who is fastest, fittest, most flexible, or most athletic. Its about who is most skilful. At his prime Woods won because he was the most skilful (and probably most drug fueled). The message is, if you wanna be good, become idolised, and a billionaire golfer then start popping the pills. Thats the legacy of Woods. I do realise this isnt a thread about him, but any discussions on golf athleticism are now intimately enraveled with the expolits of the great one.

Apologies to OP. If you want to improve your golf take that gym time and use it work on your golf game.

Westwood though proves that if you start doing the right things you can improve. He's still not what you'd call an athelte but he's more toned than the chubby player of 5 years back and is reaping the rewards.

Hasn't Titleist got a micro site somewhere dedicated to ftiness and golf related exercises. Can't remember the name of it

Doesn't Christopher Noss (Rickie Fowler's trainer) guest on there?

R U 'avin a Giraffe?

**** me. All the good players I can't keep up with wouldn't be seen dead messing around with exercise/gym/fitness for golf.

Get fit if you want to or if it's stopping you from getting from 2 to +2.

(apologies for the sarcasm :()
