Golf Fitness

Gabriel Lopez actually has his own site, where you can see loads of videos and articles about how he trains Vijay.

Lots of kettlebell throwing and swinging hammers kind of stuff!

i do all those exercises in the gym throughout the week and he is lifting pretty SHAT weights IMO i dont particulary think he really working on strength training there. Disapointed really, i thought someone like vijay would be lifting heavy for low reps with some explosive power in there.

i do something quite similar but not the exercises on the cable machine. might try dumbell bench on the stability ball,i'll probably need to use 10kg to start though haha

Although the weight he is lifting isn't a lot if you are into lifting, I would say it's more than the average man off the street, and not really fair to describe as 'SHAT'.

Why do you think he would be lifting heavy with low weight?

As for the explosive power, have you seen his sledgehammer and kettlebell throwing routines, I mentioned earlier?

low reps, high weight builds strength, hes building size, which is not needed for golf. As he is a pro athlete and has a rep for hard work, i wud say he is very average!

Explosive power like heavy clean and presses heavey woodchops etc

I understand what it does, but why would you need that for golf?

Unless his clubs are much heavier than mine, I would think sticking to lower weights, faster movement and more reps better prepares the body for golf.

If he was competing in powerlifting, I would perhaps go with what you say, and if he was a body builder, I would go with a hypertrophy routine, but for golf...

Being ranked in within the top 100 in the world (82nd (I think)) and above the average in driving distance on tour (perhaps a good stat, as most people associate fitness with distance, even if it's not always true) I would say he is well above average.

One strength needed in golf

Core strength! Strong there and you are set!

The rest of your muscles just need to be in good condition, your core has to be strong!

Golfstick I'm sure it's the other way round. Heavy wright low rep for bulking, high rep low weight for strength.

Def not!

Very heavy weight and low reps is for max strength gains
Heavy weight and moderate reps is for max hypertrophy (bulk)
light weight and high reps is for maximum endurance

Of course the benefits can cross over, so gaining strength is likely to cause you to gain some bulk too, but not the maximum that you could.

It's ok. Read my post and realised I'd been a womble. Duly edited!

I disagree with this too!
Do you hold the club with your core?

Snore off!!

Next you'll be telling me to drink protein shakes, buy a Mazda MX5 and change my name to Carl!!

I do my own kind of reps. They're absolutely of no benefit to golf but the muscles in my arms are HUGE.. :o

spot on that. Get ur coat tiger :D strength is needed in my opinion, swinging the girl weights around isnt gunna do much for u. Sure his clubs arnt heavier but wen they feel lighter, u can control them more and in time swing harder!

Did you know that vijay wakes up 4 hours before his tee off time, whatever time he is off. In this 4 hours includes a 90 minute gym session possibly at 4 am if he's teeing off at 7.30!!!!

Whilst this isn't untrue, its not all about strength. You also need some specificity. It's the same reason that swinging a heavy club may build strength, but can also ruin timing and cause a drop in speed in the short term. When you're playing 6+ rounds a week (4 competitive and 2 practice) you don't have the luxury of long recovery times that a big heavy workout would need. Maybe in the off season...

Also most people don't need more strength to hit the golf ball further, they need the ability to apply the strength they do have faster i.e power.

Golfstick and Surefire you two wee girls want to take your bickering elsewhere its a bit tiresome.
Guys who gives a crap what he's lifting it is actually about lifting what you can manage yourself not everyone is 6ft 4 and built like a brick shithouse.
