Hi All,

Currently living close to Wimbledon and considering which golf club to try and join next season, outside of the courses on Wimbledon Common and Wimbledon Park, any other recommendations for this area?

I have to say Wimbledon Common would make perfect sense. I was there for a good few years and still know a lot of the guys up there. It is a smallish club without beign to cliquey and the course may be short but it will never roll over and give you a good score. Cost wise it is pretty competitive too.

Other than that there is Malden Golf Club in Traps Lane (between Coombe Hill and New Malden). It's a parkland course but I can't comment on the clubhouse, state of the course etc as I've only been there a few times and that was a while back.

There are two courses at Richmond Park and I'm pretty sure it has a golf club attached so you can play competitions and get a handicap. The downside is that the courses get very, very busy from first light and so it can be a long affair especially at weekends.

Further afield there is a course on Mitcham Common. Not my favourite by a long way in terms of course condition or clubhouse facilities. If you go out further down the A3 there are places like Leatherhead, Horton Park, Epsom, Thames Ditton and Sandown Park

I was a junior member for a number of years at London Scottish, which shares the same course as Wimbledon Common. You won't go wrong at either club. The course isn't long, and doesn't have any bunkers, but the greens are excellent and there are some cracking holes. The handicap secretary is an old mate of mine.

Wouldn't recommend joining Mitcham as - from my experience and also from what I've heard recently from Auburn Warrior -it's not a great club, although I'd recommend you do play it as it's an excellent public course with fantastic greens.

As for Wimbledon Park, for two weeks every year in July a number of holes on the course are used as car parking for some tennis event or something that takes place near by! Just what you want during one of the peak months for your membership!! Still, it's still a very pleasant course and club.

In addition to the courses Homer has mentioned, I would definitely recommend Cuddington and Banstead, which are both only 15-20 minute drives max from Wimbledon.

Decisions decisions!! Good luck!

Good shout on Banstead. I'd forgotten that. I agree that the two Wimbledon Common course both enjoy excellent greens and I remember when GM played a challenge match against Wimbledon Common and were very complimentary. Mitcham is a great and relatively cheap course to play as a visitor but I'd never dream of joining. Again I concur that Wimbledon fortnight and losing so many holes (plus the hassle of getting in and out of the club) is a huge negative for Wimbledon Park. I think they actually lose the holes for three weeks as a lot of the OB feeds come from there too

Agree with the mention of Cuddington, and would put this over Banstead, mainly because running across the A217 dual carriageway that often, would not be fun for me. You still have to cross the Banstead road at Cuddington, but this isn't quite so much taking your life into your hands!

Also may be a little biased as I was a junior member at Cuddington!
