My wife has a neice who has moved to Windsor. She is about 22 years old, and she plays to a 12 (I think) h/cap, and is looking to join a club (she was a member at Faversham in Kent previously).

She wants a friendly club (not Royal ascot), ideally with some younger players, with an interesting course (not Royal Ascot!), which isn't stupid money.

Any ideas?

Despite your bigoted view of my club it does have a flourishing ladies section and would provide a decent test of golf. With no pre-booked times, plenty of ladies competitions (and mixed) there is a lot worse around here.

Homer, I'm sure there are loads worse, and I am sure RA is improving every year, but part of my issues with it come from talking to HTL (who may have rubbed alot of people up the wrong way, granted), who wasn't complimentary about the membership experience.

As a result I can't put RA forward as a suggestion.

Trouble is if you live in such a posh area, the best courses are all going to be very expensive. Top courses include The Berkshire, Swinley, Sunningdale, and Bearwood Lakes. Might be worth checking rates though, as a 22 year old lady might get a good deal, especially with such a good handicap.

I played around Reading, which is not so posh, and rates were good, but it is a bit too far to travel i would imagine.

I'm not sure what HTL has told you but having joined this year I haven't experienced any issues with the membership. I've been made to feel more than welcome by everyone I've met.

The course itself isn't the best in the area but it does provide a decent challenge and exceptional value compared to others around here.

I haven't seen many 22 yr old girls though, which has to be considered a downside imho :D

At age 22 she should be able to get an intermediate membership which will bring the annual cost down. Depending on how far she wants to travel, she could also look at Windlesham & Camberley Heath.

The club do hold open days on a regular basis for prospective members to come along, look around the place, chat to the captain(s) and play at least 9 holes. Why not at least suggest she comes along (free) and tries it. I think she may be surprised and I wouldn't let HTL's comments be an overriding factor.

Maidenhead is a decent track but there is a lot of booked tee times especially at weekends and I know a lot of men (and so I assume the women too) can't always play when they want although they do have ladies morning on a Tuesday although I guess your niece may work which may not help.
