In Competition, I'll start with a new one and assuming I don't lose it, I'll stick with it as long as its up to it. At the end it goes into the "general/social/practice" pocket of my bag to get used as and when.
In social play one comes from the aforementioned pocket until it gets lost or becomes totally unusable.
Depends how it is behaving if its being good never change it unless it becomes totally unplayable. I hear Tiger never changes it if he makes a bridie with it no matter how damaged and chucks it if he makes bogie.
If the ball is behaving & its not trying to loose itself, then I'll hang onto it all round. I once remember one ball lasting me 4 rounds, at least its not 4 or more balls a round. On a bad day it can get into double figures if the rough is thick & the water magnetic..lol.
I have been known in competition to change a ball for a fresh one at the next tee if its particularly scuffed up. Once did that twice over the round. But for most Amatures like myself, there is little real point.
In short I think the answer is change probably twice. But could keep one for a month...lol
I tend to start with a decent ball every round and use it until it's lost (generally takes between 3 & 10 holes )
Believe it or not my dad once used a Pro V for 7 rounds (yes i said 7),the thing was almost suede by the time he decided it had had enough
I always start with a brand new ball in competitions. Providing I don't use it I'll play with it all round. After the round if it is in good condition it'll go into my social round pile which I use for roll ups, Saturday morning swindles etc. If it is bashed up I'll put it in the practice bag.
I've developed a habit recently of not using the same make for a provisional shot. If I hit a Pro V and it is dubious as to where it has gone I'll use either a Srixon URS or a TP black.
I always use a new ball in comps and change every 6 holes or so,i tend to scuff up loads of ball with wedge play so if i hitting driver 3 wood off the tee i will change to a non scuffed ball everytime then put the scuffed ball back in play maybe on the shorter holes i dont like taking the chance hitting a scuffed one with the driver
Worst thing about golf is teeing up a brand new ball and losing it on the first shot it makes me sick
I never use a new ball on the first tee and then just pull out a ball and if it is new its new I don't really worry. I don't keep new / old separate. Plus I tend to loose a few balls. Embarrassingly I played my first 18 holes without loosing a ball today despite shooting scores of 10 + 11 over before now.
Unless you have some superstition about the ball you use then change it if you think it looks dirty or cut up. I find a fresh ball inspires confidence!! What do you guys think??
I agree actually, A fresh ball does inspire confidence, but If its a game with little meaning then I will just use an old ball till it becomes lost or battered.
