No one has a swing speed of 150 mph, including Tiger Woods who is just under 130 mph. I had no idea the golf ball compresses this much.

But first a little history I recently learned:

1- The Pro V-1 golf ball by Titleist is actually a three part ball, but you have to have a club head speed of at least 100 mph or more to be able to compress all three stages...If you don't the ball never fully compresses and you don't get the distance out of it that the pro's do.

2- We, will get more distance out of a ball that only has two stages of compression...Like the Titleist NG Tour. It is more suited to our swing speed and we can compress it upon impact and can hit it further than the Pro V-1 ball.

3- So the secret is not to buy the most expensive balls out there because unless your club head speed is over 100 mph you are actually decreasing the distance you can hit the ball.

Watch this video, this shows what a golf ball goes through when hit at 150 mph...it's amazing to me how long these balls last. Maybe that's why the Pro's use new balls ever time they play....

Wow, 70,000 frames per second.

That doesn't tell the whole story though. Yes, we may not be able to compress the ball to it's full potential off the tee but for shots around the green and for putting the tour ball feels an awful lot better than anything else.

There will be alot of players on here who hit the ball over 100 mph. I dont know my swing speed but my best guess is about 90 mph. There is also the question of feel, alot of people play the Pro V1 cos it has great feel around the green.

I think pros change there ball alot because they scuff it chipping and in sand and bad lies.

That said you are not wrong. I was in a large golf store last night and they had a chart for balls/mph for players.

It is the same with shafts, if you are a slow swinger and you use a very stiff shaft the shaft will never do its job as well as it could.

I agree with Ethan. Even a commando wouldn't deform like that

Now that was a golf ball :D :D

A note under the clip

Editor's note: The footage comes from the BBC and was shown during golf coverage. We were unable to establish whether a regulation golf ball or a 'practice ball' (with higher elasticity) was used for this experiment

The video doesn't show how a ball is affected when hit by the face of a driver either, rather than a steel plate as shown in the video.
Many of the top pros use a new ball for every hole, in fact Tiger Woods once commented that he would prefer to take a new ball for every shot if he could and the rules allowed it! :o

That video is not of a proper golf ball. The golf ball does not deform anything like that much.

Absolutely correct.
What they have done is painted a water droplet and allowed it to hit a coffee table but have "flipped" the film sideways to make it look like it has been hit at the coffee table like they did in the old Batman films to stimulate Batman and Robin walking up a wall.
Even their capes had wires inserted in them to make it look like they were hanging down when in fact they were pointing out behind them and people were nailed to the wall to make it look like they were sitting or standing normally.
You cannot pull the wool over my eyes.

WHAT??????!!!!!

The second one also shows that no matter how many times people say it, the ball isn't 'trapped' into the ground on impact.

True, but they're hitting on an artificial surface hence the club head 'sliding' onto the ball.
Couldn't find any slow mo shots on grass but I'm better that the club goes down and creates a divot.

I agree, it's just an expression. If there's loft on the face the ball will be long gone before the club would get a chance to trap it into the turf, exception being if you literally had negative loft.

That said the swing on the video did look a bit shallow, no divot even with the wedge. (liked the truning down of the long iron through impact too... looks like a slow-mo of a miss-hit!
