Looks like i'm getting a Samsung Galaxy 11, so have been looking at some apps in the hope it'll save me having to get a dedicated gps.

I read that Golfshot doesn't work on said phone, and that the R & A had banned it from competitive use anyway.

I've tried looking myself but it's a flamin minefield.

So, can anyone reccomend an app that is fairly decent (don't mind paying) and i can use in competiton?

I know it's old ground, so apologies, but would really appreciate any help

Cheers

Grant - Better to get a cheap phone & a decent GPS - I had golfshot for the iphone - whilst its ok it drains the battery & like you say Im pretty sure that all phones are banned as range finders although I could be wrong?
The best think I found about it was it could save your stats - GIR, fairways hit, putts per round & allowed you to compile for tracking where your game needs improving. This being said a number of the premium golf GPS offer similar features.

Can't get any cheaper than free pauldo! i see what your saying but you're allowed apps as long as they don't show gradient or wind direction. Ie distances only.

But there are about 3 million of them. Plus the Galaxy has a super duper power save thingy to get by the problem of battery drain, which is a problem with the iphone

Are you sure that its not all phones that are banned rather than just the iphone? I thought they made a blanket decision? I know that it was initially the iphone due to its gyroscopic/compass capabilities allowing you to "read" greens but I thought to make it clear all mobile devices which were not specifically for golf were banned?

Someone with a brain may be able to clarify?

I have Freecaddie on my Blackberry and if you only want to know yardages to front, middle and back of green it does the job.

There is a pro version of it available that gives you more details and the ability to record stats I think. not sure of cost but I dont think it will be too expensive.

And not sure if it works with the phone your getting but worth a look at their website

just for anyone who's interested, from R and A site..

Q. What about multi-functional devices, such as a mobile phone, with a distance measuring application?

A. On the course, subject to any club or course regulations, a multi-functional device may be used to phone, text or email – provided the purpose is not a breach of the Rules, e.g. you are not asking for advice.

When an application that measures distance has been downloaded to the device, the application must be restricted to providing only distance information in order to conform to the Local Rule. If there are any other features or applications on the phone that gauge or measure other conditions that might affect a player’s play, such as a temperature gauge, compass or anemometer, this would render the device non-conforming regardless of whether these other features or applications are used or not.

yep, antiquated bollox, as if anyone would use a compass on a course!!!

Rules are rulles though, I think Android phones are ok, just check whether it has a compass feature 1st

Cheers,

checked and no compass, other than a compass app! So i assume i'll be okay. If i can get away with using the new mobi it means another couple of wedges when i'm restocking the bag.

The ol compass thing does seem a bit daft to me!

It definitely has to be downloaded. I can see me having a sneaky look at the compass in the pocket and whispering in my partners ear "aim slightly south east"....

Seems bizarre when you're allowed a device that measures distance to your target within a yard or 2

Android phones are fine. So the Galaxy isn't a problem - due to there not being a compass app that's not "removable" from the phone.

Strangely, I saw a notice at my club the other day which said that iPhone's were permitted for use in Competitions. Just don't tell IMurg, he might go on a killing spree ;)

If you have the compass app on your phone then you cant use the phone - it isnt whether the app is switched on, its whether its available

Aye Chris, i was just saying it's available to download. I've not needed my compass too much in the last few months so i'll just keep using the wooden one i keep in my back pocket for directional emergencies :D

So long as you dont look at it during a round of golf

Anyway, anything worth using a compass for is going to be down south isn't it?
