slightly embarrassed to admit, but there are some golf abbreviations on here that I don't know what they mean... I've done google searches and everything but can't find what FC means in a golf context!

So, what does FC mean?

I've got (I think) some other ones I've seen over time:

PP - playing partner
HID - him/her in doors (not necessarily golf)
4BBB - 4 ball, better ball
GS - golf society
SS - swing speed...

any others I need to know, but obviously don't!

Some you will see used on here, especially in the rules section......

NPR - Nearest Point of Relief
KOVC (or just VC) - Known or Virtually Certain
GUR - Ground Under Repair
FC - Fellow Competitor (as already mentioned and very different to PP)
CDH - Central Database of Handicaps
CONGU - Council of National Golf Unions

Probably loads more..

You mention that you think Fellow Competitor is very different to Playing Partner? How so? To me they're exactly the same. Unless I go out on my own I always have a playing partner or two.

Ive never used the term Fellow Competitor, I will also use Playing Partner or "person I played with" etc
