GM Team I think I love you!!!!

The problem I've seen is that a customer walks into the store uncertain about what they want. They know they want say a cavity back because they are new to the game etc but all that happens is that AG will push their main brands. Now I understand what you are saying about doing your homework but if you are new to the game or just want to try some new irons before making a purchase, it seems so worng that the salesman won't even show them the Cally, Pings TM etc. I've even seen them say "thay wouldn't be right for you" without even seeing them hit a ball or ask about their game

It's the level of service I think I have an issue with (and no Mike I won't be putting my name forward) and the fact that customers are parting with money for gear that probably isn't what they wanted and without even the chance to see the whole range.

Oh come on, if I am spending hundreds of pounds on anything then no salesman would disuade me from trying something I liked the look of. Of course you have the chance to see a whole range you just say 'I would like to try that, it may be wrong in the end but I would like a go' and, in any event, I have never been to a golf superstore and been told not to try something. Anyway, how is that any different that going to your pro and being told that a set of irons are the best for you. What that actually translates to is, that is the brand I stock so that is what I am going to sell you. My pro would sell me Ping or Titleist because that is what he has. He is not going to say to me, actually I think Callaway have released a set of clubs that would be perfect for you, go elsewhere and buy them. Wherever you go someone is trying to make a sale and you just have to do enough research and be strong enough to get what you want.

Sales people, tut tut. I hate it whenever I walk into a shop and straight away some geek is over. "Are u alright, sir".
"do I look alright?" "if I'm not alright I'll go to the doctors!"
If I want something I'll buy it, end of.

I dont need some prick in a suit or a nice shirt and tie to tell me that I really need something. Or how good it is and how it will change my life. A million quid will change my life, not an effing driver or the latest 3d tv.

Sorry for having a rant, but had to get something off my chest.

You rant on fella, after reading your other post ,there's nothing like a sore loser, tell your son to ignore it and good luck with his golf and bowls for the season.

A mate of mine went for a fitting at one of the golf chains (don't know which) & came away with a set of Nicklaus irons as he was told that these were the ones which suited him best, until I came on this forum I had no idea that it could well have been because they were the most profitable.

If I go to one of them to buy clubs at least now I know this & will take their suggestions with a pinch of salt, otherwise I would probably have gone with their suggestion if the clubs felt right without trying some of the other brands.

Maybe the were the right set for him, if he hit them well and they were at the right price! The chap who went in after me remarked on how good the nickauls club felt at £100 less than most maybe its not a bad option

They could be, although it does put a bit of doubt in your mind.

It won't dissuade me from using them but would make me think carefully before accepting their recommendation of one of the afore-mentioned brands.

I don't really understand why everyone is on the back of Nicklaus golf gear all of a sudden.

Lets put this into perspective. If we were talking about MD or Benross everyone would be crowing about how they are such good value, good shafts etc.

Nicklaus also use decent shafts and make decent looking bats. Fujikura shafts, and nice looking heads are a winning combination in my eyes, if I was fitted for a set, I'm sure they would do just as good a job as any other set/wood. I played with Taylormade Phil a couple of weeks ago who uses a Nicklaus driver and he nuts it, not only does he nut it, he's consistant with it, proof is always in the pudding.

njc1973 - when you come over do you sail into heysham? if so just go to Heysham or Morecambe golf clubs - the pros there are good and have access to all the big brands - fitting will be spot on as well, just thinking it saves you a trip to Preston. You could use the saved time for a round of golf - if so let me know I may join you.

Had a weekend at Heysham last Sept a real good set of lads.

Glad to hear you enjoyed your trip to my neck of the woods ronnoc! Try Morecambe and Lancaster next time - arguably better courses than Heysham.

AG is no different to any other Store. I worked for One2One many moons ago and had to spend a long time one summer installing PoS systems in some phone retailers. Many of them claimed to be impartial but on the back of the door to the staff roomo was a list of commissions on certain phones and I can guarantee those were the ones they pushed, even if they were happy to tell me the phones were sh1te.

At the end of the day can you blame them? They are trying to earn a living and I should think commission is a big part of their salary. We don't like it as golfers but I suspect a lot of their customers have no idea what they are doing and it wouldn't make a blind bit of difference to them if they had a shiny set of S56s or some crappy wilsons that are probably not the most suitable. I would like to think that a golf retailer would take more care of it's customers interests but they don't and AG are doing nothing different to any other shop selling any other product.

Generally fly over, but next time I come over might just do that & take you up on your offer, unfortunately theres a fairly limited choice of clubs to demo over here & they are spread out over a number of different pro shops.
