Giving advice on a general play round - is it allowed?

• I was playing in a round registered for general play
• One of my PPs was a youngish lad mid 20s - quite new to golf [ 1 year]
• Anyway after a good start shot-wise - he staring swinging like Billy Whizz and his shots suffered +++
• I was talking ito him in general terms - he was telling me he gets nervous in comps etc
• I just told him to try to slow down his swing a bit - and that helped +++
• Then I thought - in a comp thats not allowed - but was less sure about a general play round
• So can you give advice in this situation - -Obviously i'm not talking about - "I'd play a 7 iron / the putt breaks right to left" - just general stuff

The round has to be played under the same rules as playing in a comp.
