Given up the game - can I return?

how can you say you love the game when you cannot practice, that makes no sense whatsoever.

I know several people (a few as low as 5 h/cap) who are totally obsessed with the game, love playing with mates, love playing comps... but HATE practicing.

One person I can think of from here straight away... Smiffy, loves his golf... hates the thought of having to practice.... he seems pretty happy... on his good days :p

I won't say I hate practice James, I just hate practice on range mats.
Give me a nice grass bay and I'd be happy hitting balls all day.
This game is weird.
You can go out and practice, practice, practice...hitting balls as sweet as a nut on the range, but step out onto a tee, with trees, bunkers and water hazards in view, and all the practice in the world ain't gonna help you.
I'm a firm believer in playing with what I have on the day.
Sometimes it's good, and I'm happy. Sometimes it's bad, and I'm not so happy.
But I won't go beating myself up over it.

I'm not necessarily obsessed with the game, and I have given it up in the past. But this is the first season since I started playing in the early 1990's that I have gone up to the club with the aim of hitting balls on the range, rather than going out on the course to play a few holes.

I've never been a good practicer, it bored me, you can't tell exactly how good a shot was and it lacks variety.

Had the shanks myself on Monday at the range. First time in ages I've had ball after ball going right off the hosel. Way to quick in the swing and weight moving forward. Old issues and a real shock to the system as I wasn't expecting them to appear. Glad the OP looks to have solved the mystery and let the comeback commence

Cheers Homer - all the best to you too. Hope they've gone by this weekends comp.
