How many Greens In Regulation would you hit, on average, at your home course (all estimates)?
How many GIR would a scratch golfer hit?
How many GIR would a tour pro hit?
How many GIR would a top tour pro hit?

Me (last outing): 9
Scratch: 14
Av Tour: 17
Top Tour: 18

Me: 9-11 (11 at the Mini West Midlands Meet)
Scratch: 10-12
Av Tour: 11-13 (From PGA Tour Website T90 in GIR)
Top Tour: 13-15 (Bubba No.1 74% = 13.3 GIR)

Not bad Tim

Best this season is 10 hit, average about 7, avaerage for my handicap about 6.

A truer picture emerges as an average over a number of rounds. This year (40 rounds) I'm averaging 36% GIR. Have had as good as 61% and as bad as 6%!!

Ooooh

Well yeah probably not too dissimilar:

Me: 9-11
Scratch: 11-13
Av Tour: 12-14
Top Tour: 13-16

I normally hit around 5 fairways, and probably similar GIR. That's why I have a handicap. If I hit 12 GIR, then I would be a lot nearer playing off scratch.

In terms of GIR for a scratch player, and a pro, round my course I think they would be very similar. We have a tour pro who plays there, with a lot of the very low h/caps, and there isn't that much difference in GIR.

Top tour player, probably would hit all 18, but only if they were focused. My guess is they wouldn't be.

Yeah probably 6ish GIR. The same as Murph says really.

On a great day I might hit most of them. A bad day maybe 1 or 2. Average though maybe 6.

I'd expect a tour pro to hit 13 maybe.
Top tour pro... Maybe 14-15 ???? Don't know really.

Bearing in mind you ask us for our home course but for the tour pro's they play different courses every week so maybe if they played their home course it would be almost all GIR normally.

Last game I played (+3 gross) on Wednesday I hit 6. I did have two birdies from a few inches off the green but stats is stats. I don't keep stats any more but used to a few years ago and my averages for 2006/7/8 were 6.25, 6.05 and 7.00 respectively (6 Hcp)and I doubt if I have improved much.
Another point though, if you play at a course with massive american style greens then you are bound to hit more GIR...... but your putting stats will suffer. The greens are quite small round our track.

As for Scratch golfers, pros etc. No idea really except a lot more than me!! I doubt if any would br more than 14.

I think I'm averaging about 30% GIR so far this season, haven't a clue about a tour pro.

There is however an article in (ahem) golfing world this month which compares a scratch player to a touring pro. Not read it yet mind.

My GIR's are usually pretty good, but have found that when striking my irons well, hit most greens but leave the ball in 2 putt territory (sometimes worse!).

I would reckon on hitting 6-7. Out of interest I looked up the GIR stats on HowDidIdo

All 39.43% (7 greens)
Cat1 61.01% (11 greens)
Cat2 44.21% (8 greens)
Cat3 28.76% (5 greens)
Cat4 17.44% (3 greens)

So I'd say
scratch around 12-13
Club Pro 13-14
Tour pro 16

The way I see it at our level you should average level par or close for the holes you hit GIR so you can regard your score as reflecting your play on the other holes.

E.g. Playing to 12 if I average 6 GIRs I'm playing the other 12 holes in 12 over which seems ok. Probably represents mostly bogies with a couple of par saves and a couple of doubles. If I was making 12 GIRs off 12 that would mean 12 over for the other 6 suggesting I need to work on something! Course management, recovery shots, bunker play, the occasional duck hook, whatever.

I find the more greens i hit in regulation the more three putts i have. :( :( If you do hit a green in regulation, especially a long par 3 or 4, you tend to leave a long putt. Miss a lot of greens, and chip up, and you have a lot of shorter ones.I can miss the greens ok, but just can't chip up any where near the hole.

I compare pretty badly, GIR varies from 2-7 a round depending on the conditions.

What is good is that when I am chipping well it doesnt seem to matter much. As long as I do get GIR on short par 4s and the short par 5s to give myself a birdie chance I am in good shape!

Only have 5 holes at most on my home course I expect to get on in GIR, any more is a bonus! I never count as I just focus on how to get the lowest score possible from the shot I am faced with.

If you are not good at GIRing then just get good at chipping and pitching, you can still get to a decent handicap that way.
