Hi All,

This is a spin off of a spin off thread - New Ping S55 irons - Perceived forgiveness Threads.

Who is it that needs there ball launching higher? Why is every clubs blurb about low CoG to get the ball higher. I know about high launch, low spin being the buzz phrase at the moment but everyone needs some spin or the ball will fall out the sky too quick.

As a not very good golfer one problem I have never had is getting the ball in the air, I used to create a lot of spin, less now but I have also never seen any new golfer struggle to get the ball in the air.

Is it common that new golfers hit the ball too low? Like really common so its the main aria of advance from just about every club from irons to driver.

put a 5, or even 6, iron in the hands of most high handicap golfers with a nice tight fairway lie and they will struggle to 'get the ball in the air' ie they won't get the true apex height on the shot.

what better golfers tend to want is a relatively high launch (for the loft) but low flight ie penetrating flight

Not normally a problem with about 6/7-iron down, but can be above that - particularly 3/4.

Shallow (released) swing is normally the cause and unless a decent strike is made, the ball won't go far at all.

I struggle to get the ball in the air (based on my recent Trackman session). I mean, I get it in the air, it's just not going as high as it should and coming in a lot flatter. This is mainly caused by my 8 year old girl swingspeed by all accounts.

Same for me,not a very good golfer but never struggled to get the ball in the air. If anything I'd prefer a slightly lower ball flight.

It's a good question this. To be honest I have no idea.

Like you, I've never had a problem launching the ball, but it did take me a while at my fitting to narrow a shaft that gave me a consistent mid flight that gave me my optimum mix of height, distance and dispersion.

I played with a 26 h'capper the other day who struggled to get the ball in the air with any club, but new clubs weren't going to help him with that, he just wasn't very good :D

And what was your perception of why? launching to low? not enough spin? Hitting the ball fat/thin? All of the above?

Mostly thin from memory, the odd fat. He really just wasn't very good. He "got away with it" (if shooting 103 can be called getting away with it?) because the ground is dry so his thins went a long way and to give him his due, he wasn't a bad putter, but as I said, the clubs weren't the problem.

Surely it's a case of if the club can launch higher you can reduce the loft to gain distance but maintain the same flight?

Ye, Launch/Impact conditions, I had forgotten about that. Its not really sold like that though is it?!

I played an inter club match with a chap that has nothing longer than a 6 iron..... He plays off 16 and to be honest has a decent swingspeed..... But for some reason he cant hit a long iron...... I guess its a confidence thing...... Iv a playing partner than the same,
he has a 4 iron thats as shiney new as it was the first day he bought it...... I cant get my head round that...... Surely if you cant get a ball in the air with some of the new "Game Improvement" clubs then you need to look at technique.....

I hit the ball pretty high and hard which probably generates the spin... Probably a bit too much at times but its easier to flight a ball down if needed than to get it up in the air.....Iv no issue getting long irons up in the air off the fairway.....
Id love to try a 3 iron to see how i would fair out....

According to my fitting session and lessons with launch monitors I am hitting down and compressing nicely so no hassle getting it airborne. In fact I am happy with my flight. A lot of my regular roll up group have lowish ball flights but still manage to score. Does it really matter as long as you can keep it on the short grass regularly
