Getting away for Christmas

I’m not a fan of Christmas (hate it) and the weather being particularly guff at that time of year so am thinking of taking the family away to somewhere warmer.

Marrakech is my first choice seeing as I haven’t been to Morocco yet and the weather seems to be around the 20*C at that time of year.

Obviously COVID dependent....

Has anyone here been there over the holiday season? What’s it like? Was the weather good enough to warrant the time over there in December?

I've been to Essaouira and Marrakech on a 2 centre holiday and also Agadir another time, but this was at Easter time I think. Essaouira was really nice, thoroughly recommended that, can't remember that much about Agadir. But I remember everything was cheap as chips, even though at times you were charged the tourist prices.

Marrakech was an experience, I did enjoy it but it was a bit full on at times and I didn't find that relaxing. We were in a Riad and not a touristy hotel. I never felt threatened or unsafe but you can get hassled a bit. It's easy to just say no thanks but I found it a bit tiring as I was with my family and my daughter was not that old at the time. Alcohol can be difficult to get hold of at times when you are out of Marrakech.

The Canaries is my go to place for nice weather out of summer season, but never been over Christmas so not sure how warm it is then.

We went to Morocco at Easter. It was lovely, and if I went again would be my preferred choice.
Given that Marrakech is near the mountains and a fair distance inland , I wonder if the weather is more changeable in midwinter.
I slightly preferred Fez to Marrakech, but both are real experience. A lot of the riads are run by French expats and are more civilised than I expected.
Enjoy, it's one of my favourite holiday experiences. Apart from the roads, which can be a bit mental.

How did it compare temperature wise to the canaries at easter time?

From my vague memory I think it was a bit hotter in Morocco when I was there, but I think decent weather in the Canaries is a bit more guaranteed. I'm not a fan of really hot weather so early 20s and sunny is ideal for me. Which the Canaries delivers when I usually go which in either Easter or October half term.

I've not been for Christmas per se, but have been in December and in January. Published average temp' is about 17/18 degrees. But that is the average - and remember that meteorological temperature relates to air temp in the shade. In the sun it will be warmer. My experience is that is very nice - at least it is on La Gomera, our island of choice. Generally it's shorts & t-shirt weather. Al fresco dining in the evening you may need a long sleeve shirt. And I've certainly never needed anything more than a light jumper - sometimes necessary in the evening if the breeze is up.

This just sounds better and better!

Have now booked a place in Marrakesh with free cancellation on Booking to take account of the possibility that COVID could still be stuffing things up.

Cheers all
