Sold my Garmin G3 as i found i was struggling to view it and tended to only use the distance to green info

Now got the Garmin S1 on offer at AG £129 which is simpler, faster and easier for me to read every time

I think the G3 was great but too much information when you are trying to keep play moving etc

Backwards step not sure but the S1 seems the solution, nearly got the Bushnell watch !

I quite fancy an S1

Sitting on the fence at the moment tho

Did the same myself. Couldn't read my shotmeiser most of the time, so got the S1 for £125, and it is perfect for my needs.

Strangely a mate of mine has one as well, and whilst playing Royal North Devon, the course did not come up on his, but did on mine. He did a get a bit peeved when it kept telling him he had three miles to the first green at Saunton.

2 of my regular 4 ball have sold there skycaddies and bought S1's after seeing mine. I love mine, I don't even notice it on my wrist now. (It feels wrong if I goto the range without it)

I was nearly tempted to get the S3 but to have over £200 on my wrist seemed so wrong !

Again the S3 is too much information, a distraction i think less is more with the S1

Happy to know distances to green and work out the rest myself

Tell your mate to go to the Garmin website & download the small updater program.
He can then just plug his watch in & update the firmware & the course database, it only takes a few minutes.

Interesting thread - anyone "go the other way", as it were? I'm undecided as to what device to get but had narrowed it down to these 2, so this thread is pretty relevant. Thanks all

How often do you wish you had the birds-eye view of the hole function? Im thinking of unfamiliar courses (Ill be playing a few next year thats what its really for).

I've got the S1 and really like it, it is very useful and for pace of play it's excellent. My only problem is hazards. Sometimes it is very useful to have the layup/carry distance to hazards. I've made unnecessary errors due to not having this info a few times. I may consider a budget laser finder for the odd occasions in the round when I need a non-green related distance.

Thanks Pippo, that is what I feared. I wondered if it would be effective to combine the information the S1 does give with a course planner, and by subtraction get carry/lay up distances in the right ball park. I guess the problem is always if you are not in a straight line with hazard and green, this is the one eventuality that makes me think I should go for the G3, whereas a lot of the time I think the S1 would just be easier. Decisions decisions...

If you regularly play courses with a course planner than I say it's perfect. I used it at Celtic Manor and had no trouble with the strokesaver/S1 combo. The problem is our home course have discontinued the strokesavers and I lost my only copy!!

Had an S1 for a year or so now - great if you tend to play same course/s regularly, accurate and less hassle than hand-held (and harder to lose). I do miss the hazards info on new courses though!

D'oh! You could always make your own, Google Earth has a tape measure function that isn't all that inaccurate, take some screen grabs of holes you might need carry info on, hit print, scribble some key distances and Bobs your uncle!

I've used it to add stuff to our strokesaver that is missing. Unfortunately the aerial photos are often a 4 or more years old, so any new bunkers added for instance won't show up.

Ps thanks Eagle my thoughts exactly, no wonder Im having such a tough time deciding!

That's a good idea, might give that a go!
