In the early 1970's I was coaching winter evening classes at a school.
Coconut mats and plastic ball stuff...........my we have moved on.

The golfers were all beginners, mixed ages and sexes. Venue, school gymnasium.
One guy was the class know it all and came in one night with a cheap half set of clubs.
He was the centre of envy and attraction, everyone admiring his new set.

His turn to play and on the first shot the head come off his 5 iron and smashes into the roof sending everyone diving for cover.
I picked up his seven iron and twisted the head off the shaft...they had not been glued properly.

I played many years ago in a match with a beginner. In those days, if you had to take a drop, you faced the hole & dropped the ball over your shoulder. This lad had an unplayable lie in the rough & went to drop a ball in the semi. Having done so, he couldn't find it, which was very strange. After hunting around for quite a while we eventually found the ball - in the hood of his waterproof!

On the same coconut mat/evening class theme.

Pro I know had two golfers enter his shop and ask to buy some divots.
You can't buy divots he explained.

One replied .........'but the guy coaching us said that we had to take one with each iron shot'.

Couple of years ago pp was about ten feet back from the pond on our 5th. Pulled his club out of the bag, caught the on switch of his trolley! It shoots forward into the pond with him jumping after it! Me and the other pp could do nothing to help as in fits of laughter!!

Once saw a guy in the monthly medal try to cut a dog leg, topped his ball OB so he re loaded. Did exactly the same again, reloaded an hit it OB for the 3rd time. Again he reloaded and calmly layed up into the fairway. He then walked back to his bag and totally lost it taking 3 or 4 big swings at his bag.

Team of three players on the 1st tee at Calcot Park playing a yellow ball format. They discuss each hole, strategy, who should play on which holes and where they get shots. Eventually they decide on the order of play. First guy takes the yellow ball, tees it up and hooks it 100 yards left and out of bounds.

Everyone else waiting to tee off needed gas and air to recover from laughing so hard.

Similar thing happened at one of our society weekends at St Mellion on the Nicklaus course. Yellow ball was driven to the 2 handicapper on the 1st hole and he managed to slice it right into the farmers field never to be seen again.

One of our Past Captains showing off the capability of his new electric trolley prior to first round on a club trip with about 30/40 around the tee...."look, you just press this button and it goes 30 yards" he said as he pressed it to proudly demonstrate....failing to notice the pond at 27 yards. The really funny bit was the one wheel still visible after the lot had toppled in continued to turn for exactly 3 yards!

playing at the belfry with a group of friends.....one of the guys took 11 shots to get outside of a greenside bunker. I turned to face another of the guys after 6 (or so attempts) and he was in hysterics already. Fair to say I putted through tears on that hole.

About 20 years ago, a group of us were playing Balmore. The 14th has a low stone wall about 100 yards down the fairway. My mate fluffs his drive about 5 yards short of it, then takes out his 5 wood for his second. We all look at each other thinking "this is a bit ambitious" and take a few steps back. The ball whacks the top of the wall as we all duck for cover, followed by silence. No sign of the ball for what feels like ages, then we hear a big thud. Turn round to see it's landed back on the teeing area! It must have practically been in orbit. We all crease ourselves as my mate wanders back to play his third with a face like fizz, about 3 yards further back than where he tee'd off from. Could hardly look at anyone for the remaining holes without laughing (we were about 16).

Captain's drive in this year, Ladies and Men's captains on the tee, the ladies captain proceeds to hit a fine 170 yard drive down the middle. Then the new captain stands up explaining he will be hitting his driver takes a practice swing then proceeds to top his drive just past the ladies tee.

He still gets bashed for that now.

Stone cold sober in Mexico, tee'd off about 7am and at 7.05 I drove a buggy into a bunker. Not as if it was a small bunker either, it was HUGE!

I'd been driving it over some humps and bumps alongside the fairway, saw a bunker in the distance, then found out that even though the part of the bunker I'd seen in was quite a ways away, the rest of it was straight after the hump I was currently cresting.

Queue four of us trying to push the buggy back out. Took us 10 mins but we did it.

I wasn't allowed to drive after that.

My most memorable funny moment of 2014 was when one of my esteemed GM colleagues forgot he was using the new Stewart follow trolley during our trolley test at a Top-25 venue. The result was him leading his trolley across the middle of a green as he marched off towards the next tee box.

Which reminds me of the time someone thinned a wedge to our 18th. It went straight past the ear of our pro, who was standing in the doorway of his shop and ricocheted around the inside of the shop.
