As an aside to the BMW thread the good lady dropped a comment last night that she would like to change her car. She has a 2004 VW Beetle 1.6 and to be hoest its okay to drive and it looks good when clean and polished but for a 1.6 she gets ...

27 MPG !!!!!!!!!

Even when on the motorway sitting at 3000rpm it is doing 54 mph. Is this the worlds worst car for fuel economy?

I am now on the look out for a 2006+ Mini One diesel which gives 60 mph.

17-24mpg 4.6 v8 X5 IS (family wagon, one of the only motors out there that can properly accomodate 3 child seats in the rear))
10-20mpg 2.0 Impreza WRX with a drink problem. (my daily)

Its funny that insurance and fuel is reasonable given the mileage we do annually, servicing is the expensive bugger.
Before these, I had a diesel Octavia VRS which did 40mpg and a leon Cupra (engine modified 1.8 20v Turbo which the missus drove as I had a company derv) which did 32mpg.

I had a 98 Impreza and that also had a serious drinking problem!!! :D

I get about 30mpg from a 2.0 Turbo (petrol).
How come the Subaru's are so bad?
Are yours heavily modified or do I drive like a granny?
I suppose 4wd has something to do with it.

Short journeys really are the killer.
The Castle Stuart trip is around 475 miles for us, I expect to spend £100 on fuel alone (2 fills), in a diesel motor that would be one fill up and £55 quid. I bought the car for a bit of enjoyment, not its economy as Ive done economy for quite a while and changing jobs to somewhere very local, I only do 2 miles per day. Running cold, the boxer engine is a thirsty bugger, the v8 X5 is actually better until warmed.
On a long trip back from kent, I managed an average of 24mpg in the X5, the impreza should be able to better that by a couple, but not many.

If I am really careful I can stretch to 18-20 mpg on a motorway cruise. If A roads then 12-14 is good and if I really push it 8-10 mpg. But then on the positive side I don't pay road tax and only £130 a year for fully comp insurance. (And I grin all the time I drive her!)

Currently get about 30 mpg from my diesel merc E300TD. Mrs mog gets 26 fom her 321 bhp Z3 M coupe.

I am seriously thinking about a Chrysler 300C 6.1 SRT touring. Book is about 18 mpg, but I figure if I get more than 12 I will be doing ok.

I have always (til now) run big V8s and 6s, and diesel is not the same. Junk. Rusty junk too.

Got a 1.6 HDI Xara Picasso and the computer tells me current average is 54.6mpg Thats a blast round the bypass to get to work and a bit of town driving each day. A good run on the motorway @65 mph on cruise control will give just short of 60mpg. ;)
