Fuel consumption .....

If I am really careful I can stretch to 18-20 mpg on a motorway cruise. If A roads then 12-14 is good and if I really push it 8-10 mpg. But then on the positive side I don't pay road tax and only £130 a year for fully comp insurance. (And I grin all the time I drive her!)

Nice lines!
That looks like a lot of fun, what car is it (sorry not a petrolhead)
How does she handle?

Would like to drive that from Ballater to Grantown, you'd get through the gears on that road!

Got a 1.6 HDI Xara Picasso and the computer tells me current average is 54.6mpg Thats a blast round the bypass to get to work and a bit of town driving each day. A good run on the motorway @65 mph on cruise control will give just short of 60mpg. ;)
My 06 1.6 petrol xsara Picasso gives me 33mpg, if I drive really sensibly I can get it up to about 36mpg!!!

My old manual Volvo S80 D5 (2001 on a Y plate) used to average about 50 mpg but would get up to about 57 mpg on a run at a steady 80-85 mph (on a track obviously!).

My new model S80 D5 manages about 32mpg on average adn about 37 on a run. Not great but I'm sure a lot of it is down to the automatic gearbox. Lovely to drive but the mpg is disappointing.

Blast round the bypass!!!!! Does the car fly? That road is just a car park at rush hour
No, but just make sure you're on it before the rush hour. At my desk with first tea of the day by 7:30am

An hour later and the journey would take considerably longer.

Last company car I had was a Passat Estate 1.9 Tdi Bluemotion, now that was amazing. Managed a whole family summer holiday, 800 miles driving, on one tank back in 2008.

I''l be looking for one of those when I change next time. It was amazing

It's a MkII Cobra 289. 5 litre V8 260bhp 280 lb/ft torque. No ABS, Traction Control, power steering or servo brakes. Quite a handful to drive especially in the damp/wet. Wheelspin at 70 mph in top if the road is anything but bone dry. Fantastic!
Done a fair bit of driving around the roads you mention. In fact I will be heading up that way at the end of May. Then off to Le Mans and Silverstone in July. :D

Nice motor Clive!

Somebody else mentioned Cruise control. I drove to Austria recently and noticed a huge dip in mpg when using the cruise control on the autobahns for extended periods versus when I took control and drove at similar speeds. Is that normal?

I get 34 out of my 2 litre Megane Coupe and 38 out of the wife's Qashqai.

I find c/control uses a little more fuel, yes.
I reckon in top gear that sometimes the management has to pile on/in the fuel to retain the speed.....

Jeremy Clarkson drove an Audi A8 TDI from London to Edinburgh and back on a tank of diesel. He didn't use cruise control or any electrical accessories.

Mrs mog gets 26 fom her 321 bhp Z3 M coupe.

Ooh, nice.

I've averaged just under 40mpg with my Citroen C4 1.6 VTR+. If I'm careful I can hover around 45mpg, but mostly I just use it for short journeys to and from work and 40s a struggle.

If you want something small and fun, my mate's not long had a Smart Sports. Paddle shifters, revvy little engine, and if he thrashes it he complains that it dips under 50mpg! Usually 60-70mpg.

One of my colleagues has the Brabus version of the Smart Sports and it drives like a massively souped up go-kart. Amazing fun.

I'm officially depressed now.

I needed a full tank for tomorrow and filled up today.

My car has just broken through the £20 for 100 miles barrier.

trip odometer read 133 miles, cost me £26.80 to fill (from 2/3rds) to the top.

I remember doing 100 miles for £10 of unleaded.

I've always found that using cruise control uses more fuel.
Problem with it is it cannot see an incline coming, so only accelerates once it realises the car is slowing down. Too late. The pedal has to go down further to maintain speed.
We on the other hand tend to compensate in advance and use the accelerator accordingly.
That's my theory anyway, and I'm sticking to it

I have a Audi A6 3litre diesel, with a 80 litre tank. I usually get about 550 miles between refuels. I don't worry too much about consumption, and I leave on the AC and other toys.
