no matter how much I warm up or go to the range
before I play I always manage to screw up my front 9.
The back 9 I am roughly on average 5/6 over. If could
get the front 9 lower I’d be a happy bunny

Anybody else suffer with this???

Have you tried playing the back 9 first? You might find it is simply tougher on the front? It may answer some questions??

I don't have a consistent 9 I score well on although seem to go through phases when I'll struggle on the front and murder the back and vice versa. Bob Rotella would say that's my subconscious image of myself doing what's required to get me in my comfort zone!

Oh yes.Played Sunday, went round the front nine in 12 over but the back nine 4 over.Played to my handicap, but it's a consistent thing. If I could even half the number of shots I lose on the front I'd be delighted.

not tried the back 9 first Amanda... not sure that that is the problem to be honest.
As it happens every time I play no matter where I play. I’ve even thought of only
playing the front 9 (or 1st 9) as a 1/4 swing or use just my go-to club regardless
of the length of the hole :-S

Maybe get to the course earlier, have relax, watch some people off the first etc.. Generally just relax, have a good warm up, the relax a bit more... It's all a mind game, once you find your required state of mind to tee off on the first, you will be laughing! I do not like to ruh, I like to arrive a good hour before teeing off...

Have you tried the not warming up method? Before a comp I go to the range but usually practice rounds are get to the tee and do some rotational warming up, stuff to get my shoulders moving and loose, a dozen swishes with the driver and step up and hit a beauty. The go to the range first variety seems to result in a less than favourable 1st shot even when it's not a comp. Is it expectation as the range went well or anxiety coz it didn't?

I think you are getting a tad closer there Amanda ;-) I reckon it could be my expectation levels. I want to better my scores etc, and just end up failing miserably.

What’s your front 9 secret Scazza?

Get up to the Club about 40 minutes before teeing off, pop into the Pro Shop, have a bit of banter with the lads behind the desk, pay my competition entry. Prepare pockets with tees, ball, glove, pitch mark repairer and ball marker. Head to the practice putting green have a few putts, have a few practice chips, get the 7 iron out and hit a few balls in the practice net, then walk up to the tee 10 minutes before my tee time.

That is how I prepare for my round, it does my front 9 absolute wonders at the moment! :whoo:

I don't know how much you warm up but it is possible to over-do it without drink/food.

Tell yourself you're only going to play the front 9, or you are allowed to drop 1 shot every 3 holes, or send me £1 for every shot over your h/cap you drop

....... looking at the finishing line is a good way of losing focus on the job in hand... one shot at a time, nothing riskier than an 8/10... pop the putts in the small round hole and the job's a good 'un.

I like to take my old score card and plan out problem holes shot by shot, remembering what went wrong last time (or went well!!!).

Funnily enough I always warm up before any round including the roll ups and usually have a dodgy front nine. Hawkeye use to be there with me on the practice ground but he's stopped and does OK. Might be something to try on Saturday and see if there is something in it

before the big ones this year ill be heading round the small 9 hole course. ive tried this before and played really well. no matter who you are it takes a while to warm up. yes, im gulity of the three practice swing warm up my self. its hard to really motivate yourself to do a proper warm up as an amature. i always like to get a few putts before hand too but im not sure if this actually helps.

I am the opposite also front 9 -2 today back 9 +5, played steady on the front 9 with nothing special and was -2 up to the 11th.

Think I thought about protecting the score a little and dropped a shot at each of the next 3, settled down again with par at 15 then lipped out on 16 and 17 for par but finished with a good par on 18 after being blocked out by trees on my second, only thing that upset me was acouple of 3 putts and at 32 putts its just a few too many.

Nice shooting Toad. I'd take 32 putts if I could hit every green in regulation.. no point just heaving more pressure on the putting

Obviously MY putting is under immense pressure as I hardly hit any greens and should play off 14

actually scrap that... my chipping is under pressure to get close enough to help make the putts...

actually scrap that it's all sh*t

I was god knows how many over on the front 9 today, didnt start the back too great , par, bogey, double !! But then finished off 1 under for the last 6 and got to 36 pts. I dint play particularly great golf and think it helped in that I knew theer was no pressure as score was a bit pants Overall im happy that I can string 5-6 decent holes together and my plan is to try and extend this to 7-8 then9-10 etc or just to have 2 runs of 6 holes where I am close to par.
May not be text-book but I find if you break the course up into small sections you dont get too ahead of yourself.

Didnt help today in that I had a lesson beforehand and have some stuff to change - probably not the best idea to do it during a round :whoo:

Same for me as the OP, always score worse on the front than the back, but the front 9 is generally considered to be the tougher at our place.

Try changing your course management of the key holes, I've tried this lately with some success, alter the club you take from the tee maybe? Then break the front 9 down in to 3 sets of 3 and try to better your score to par on each 3.
