Friday at the Ryder Cup

Firstly I know they cannot do anything about the weather but a few comments from a spectator:

After leaving home at 345 in the morning and after picking up a few buddies we arrived at the East car park at 06h00 to join the other merry followers following Monty’s Men, to join a queue and to be told the following:
“we were not expecting this many people and we are not ready to receive the coaches at the drop off point”
So for the next 30 minutes we had to wait in the rain

Half of the airport type scanners were not working which then added to more delay, quote from one of the guys working there:
“are you sure umbrellas are allowed?”

After the laughter we all moved on.

Drop off point and walk in was a long way from the course but it is what it is maybe we need to be VIP’s?

Catering on site:
£4.00 for a beer, come one where does that come from you have already taken £100 off me to get in???
£8.50 for fish and chips (fish was equivalent to a mini fish and chips in my local chippie) – see comment above about my ticket price, to be fair the lady here also thought it was a rip off and gave us an extra piece of fish

Weather forecast was for rain and yet if you were on the course there was very few places to get out of the rain – maybe I need to be a VIP?

We had a great day overall because it is what it is and Sir Terry wanted to give Wales a legacy he certainly has done that:
Don’t come to Wales in October
We like a drink but you have to be super rich to enjoy it
Our food is second to none if you like mini fish and under cooked chips

Thank you anyway and you know what – I will go to Scotland but can’t wait until 2018 when hopefully I can get out my shorts and enjoy my time at the Ryder Cup in Europe without being ripped off, thank you Sir Terry for a great introduction to Wales.

To be fair Steve the facilities were no better or worse than when I've been to The Open. Prices are always a rip off, only way around it is to take your own food in. They can't put shelter in place for 40,000 people in case it rains, it was just bad luck imho

We got to the east car park at 5.45, got straight through security and onto a bus. We were on the course well before 7.
I agree with the food prices but you know that's going to happen.
With regard to the amount of rain, I don't think they could have predicted the downpour was going to be as bad as it was. If it had been "ordinary"rain they wouldn't have even had to come off the course. No shelter but then we were there to watch golf.

Exactly why I wouldnt ever choose to go, hate crowds and being ripped off.

Add in the dousing that Friday brought and I'm sure as hell glad I was working tbh.

It is always pricey at these events (BMW, Open etc). I presume you couldn't take a pack lunch in via a rucksack then?

I was stopped taking a rucsack in at the park and ride. No bags bigger than 8x6 inches. Not going to get.much of a day's worth of grub in that.

I think you were unlucky Imurg. A lot of other people have had rucksacks allowed and watching it on TV plenty are carrying them now. I'd have taken my chances and put it on

Apparently the Masters don't rip off the "patrons".

Prices are reasonable there why can't they be everywhere? Saw it at Birkdale, I think the fish and chips were about £7.50.

They were nice but not £7.50 nice.

Still it's always been the way I remember my dad nearly fainting at the price of 3 pints at Wembley back in the 80's.

We are from Leeds so they might have been reasonable

I know that some of you know that I hate paying over the odds BUT, I try to look at things this way. If something is £4.00 on the high street and £5.00-£6.00 at a pricey place, to pay £7.50 for something is only a few quid more. Better to forget the odd quid. I paid £6 a pint t'other day. If it had been £4.50, I'd have considered that a fair price given the establishment, so rather than considering I spent £18 on three beers, I just paid £4.50 more than I would have liked.
Better to write of less than a fiver than get all grumpy and not enjoy the experience of where I was.


Or, put another way. I was thirsty on a plane once (10 years ago).....and asked how much the tiny coke cans were. £2 was the answer.

My reply was "why don't you just make the flight £375 instead of £350 and give them away free....that way I don't have to endure paying £2 for something that's cost you 20 pence!"

I went Thursday was allowed a ruck sack with food and drink in, weather was better crowds were not as big and the ticket was half the price.
The only thing missing was the atmosphre on the first tee, it was still a great day though and I drove so the price of the beer did not bother me.

Sounds like you were unlucky with the rucksack. Was there on Wednesday and loads of people took them in, also noticed plenty on TV each day.

Agree about the cost of food and drink, we consumed numerous cups of coffee (small) at £2 a go. Although my jacket potatoe with cheese was £4.50 - not too bad. As others have said, it is always like this at big events. £2 for a small bottle of water at The Open.
