morning all

we are looking for a guinea pig to do a coaching session sometime in the next month in the Cambridgshire/East Anglia area with a coached called Tim Nightingale (www.timnightingale.me) and report back on what the session was like for a blog on the site

Tim is a WGTF and uses his Performance Golf Coaching system to teach pupils. The sessions are undertaken on course and look at both technical and mental game aspects

Ideally the session would take place in the next few weeks and on a weekday.

If you are interested and can make the location and a weekday in October please mail me (michael_harris@ipcmedia.com) with your name, handicap and contact details

Hi There.
I am definitely interested.

I live South of Norwich (Tacolneston), about 1 hr drive from Cambridge. I can make it this weekend, Oct 3 or 4, Friday,16,23 or 30th - afternoons.
Member of Dunston Hall, Norwich.
Current Handicap 27, been playing almost 3 yrs, age 56.

WGTF....?? Aint that the federation that any chopper can pretend to be a coach with? 7 days course and a 20 handicapper can tell you what to do.

Didn't think any of this lot were taken seriously?!

Your not getting confused with the EGTF (European Golf Teachers Federation) are you?

I certainly am not,Funnily enough I met a guy who is one of these this afternoon and he tells me he played off 16 before doing his 'coaching course'....wouldn't go near them,to me you need to be a decent standard to understand the mechanics and if you are good enough surely you would go down the P.G.A. road instead of this lot?? Mental side?Possibly if you were into that but mechanical side? Never! But hey, don't let me put you off...

You won't be putting me off. I'm taking the PGA level 1 coaching course in November. You can also take level 2 without having a low handicap.

Good luck Twire.
If your not sure about something, make good use of your mentor or drop me a pm.

I am indeed the coach who is providing the session, and I obviously would like to respond to the comments about the WGTF.

Being a coach does not mean you have to be a golfer. As a full-time WGTF coach I spend all of my my non-coaching time researching coaching methods across all aspects of the game. I have expert skills in sports psychology using NLP and CBT methods, and know that a strong mental game is just as important as a strong outer game. Dismiss that at your peril.

Yes, you are quite right, anybody with any handicap can APPLY to be a WGTF coach. However I will assure you that the minority pass the arduous certification process. I have seen two scratch golfers on my assessment fail. Brilliant golfers. Poor coaches. The training is the same duration as a PGA Level II course and is easily on a par with a Level III PGA qualification. I could spend £500 and get a PGA qualification over four weekends. I do not need to.

WGTF Master Coaches MUST have qualifications in NLP, MUST attend club fitting training, MUST attend The Golfing Machine course (Homer Kelly for those in the know) and have already passed the basic coaching skills course.

So, if you want a golfer who can show you how to play a great shot, then by all means dismiss the WGTF. However if you want a coach that treats the Inner and Outer game with equal importance, has expert COACHING skills, is conversant with how important providing effective feedback is, is non-judgemental, has expert swing analysis skills and puts the clients needs above everything else, then the WGTF for you.

I leave you with some questions. When a PGA coach assesses you on the driving range what good is that? It is not contextual. It does not reveal your true game, hampered by the pressure of the course. It does not reveal your Mental State skills, or Course Management skills. Is your current coaching reflective of the breakdown of percentage of shots you play in a round? Putting %. Short game % etc. Do you know these stats for your game? You will if you are coached by me. How could I coach you without seeing you on the course? I would NEVER coach anybody apart from complete newcomers to the game without seeing them play at least 9 holes. It is compulsory. I cannot see their true game unless this happens.

Do any of these coaches walk the course with you and take details on EVERY shot you play? I do. Do you get detailed information on five aspects of your game? The Power Game. The Short Game. Putting. Course Management. Mental management. I do. Does a PGA coach spend lots of time with you working on your mental state management skills, assess the strengths of your various senses (sight, sound and touch) - essential knowledge for a coach.? I do. Do they analyse and enhance your pre-shot routine? I do. Do they provide you with home based visualisation exercises, relaxation exercises and techniques for creating mental state triggers and anchors? I do.

In essence. I challenge anybody to undertake my free evaluation and pass the details on to the editor who is supporting this process. Whilst one person will be featured, everybody that accepts this challenge will receive a report that will provide a breakdown on how to improve their game without making any SWING changes whatsoever. Does the PGA coach offer you that? I doubt it. Do they guarantee to improve your game? I doubt it. Do they set long-term goals? The majority don't. Do they set goals for the sessions? Many don't. I do both and more.

If you would like to take this COMPLIMENTARY offer to improve your game, irrespective of location in England, then contact me via my web site at www.timnightingale.me. In most cases I will travel. Please contact me to find out. In some cases we can organise group rounds. If you truly believe that my coaching skills are inferior purely because my golf skills are backed up by the WGTF then I will warn that such a closed-minded approach indicates a mind-set that will impact on your golf game as well. That is not meant to be an insult, however it is a fact I will back-up during coaching. Please take up the challenge. I am happy to put my reputation on the line, as I have complete faith in my skills and evidence in past results. Every person (and that is a lot) that has attended my assessment has gone on to improve their game and attend further group or one-to-one coaching. Worst case you will lose a few hours, best case and the only case is I WILL improve your game.

One final thought. NEVER judge a coach by his/her badge or golfing ability. PGA, WGTF, EGTF. Coaching is a skill in its own right. That is certainly what the WGTF is assessing during its certification. Golf skill is irrelevant. Coaching skills are everything. As a coach I coach in sports I do not play, and make a difference to the client. Purely because of the improvement in the client's Mental State management skills. I could spend my time maintaining a scratch playing level, or as I do I spend my time working on being the world's best coach - which I believe I am. You may argue. However having this inner belief is what every person needs in whatever they do.

Enjoy your next round.

Hi dodger

I am indeed the coach that posted the above response, and obviously read your post with great interest. I was hoping that you may be tempted to take up the reader offer? Would you consider letting the Editor know if you are interested? Where are you based? I am happy to travel to you.

Just for confirmation. If anybody else is interested please do not hesitate to contact me.

I'd take you up on the offer Tim but too far away for me.

It's a different approach and think it's a bit harsh to criticise until it's been tested.

I boxed at a pretty high standard, there were plenty of high level coaches who had been pretty crap boxers in their day, so it's not necassarily true to say you have to be a top player to be a top coach.
