Hi guys was away for a iron fitting with the club pro who is a golf smith club making.

After testing all the lays and shafts etc we agreed that forged irons would be the way forward for me with some stuff of super light weight shaft.

However the price I was getting for his branded stuff was almost 700 quid and to be honest I don't think I could hand out 700 quid for a set of irons.

Just not sure what to do or were to go from here. Any advise etc would be a great help.

Many thanks in advance
Hendy

Although I am a big fan of forged irons, and always use them, I think this you may have started with the the wrong question. Deciding you need forged clubs is akin to deciding that you will buy a diesel car, but should you buy a Merc S Class or a Fiat Punto diesel? Big difference between the two.

Forged clubs arguably provide better feel, and Mizuno clubs including the MX200 are great clubs for the right player, so I am a fan, but what sort of club are you really looking for?

You can get forged clubs in ultra-players and game improvement versions, so the better question is whether you need a club that offers forgiveness or playability? What sort of shaft do you need? If that is forged, fine.

sorry i dont have any idea on what the club heads were and have looked on the golf smith web site but cant find them they were kind of chrome finish to them they were a little chessey for my liking but the results were good.

Itwas name i have not heard before but i do remember the shaft/s that i liked

1st choice was the True Temper GS 75 Iron Shaft(r300)
2nd choice was the True Temper Black Gold Shafts

was sold with the weight of the GS 75 thats why i liked them the best however the Black gold was a close 2nd as i really liked the feel off it.

I will continue to have a look to see if i can come across the heads. But they were not snake eyes.

One of the main reason i was looked at forged was to one to get a custom fit done and secondly to get a iron to try and take my hc down some more this year..

i find chipping etc with the G2 some what a pain now (due to the high bounce on the irons) and prefer to chip 90% of shots with the lob wedges listed below. Dont get me wrong 2 years ago i would not have dreamed nor dared to use a lob wedge from 100 yards in. But feel my game is at a turning point and now is the time to make the move to something even like thr MX200.. As I have tested them in the range a few times with the mate and are much better than the G2's imo but however now if i was getting them i like to change the lay and shafts lol

Also i need to point out during the fitting he used some sort of forged titleist and once he got close to my setup i was hitting it so well i just wanted to put it into my bag and head home lol

Its crap not having the knowledge of all types of clubs and brands like 90% of you guys :(

looking forward on your reply..

p.s its not that i dont think the clubs i was fitted for are worth 700 quid i just dont want to hand out 700 quid for something when i can get something with the same setup (branded) for around 300/400 quid.

EDIT: these are close http://www.gamolagolf.co.uk/acatalog/Maltby_MPC_Forged_Iron_Heads.html tho still looking

How many irons are you after? 5-PW or 3-SW or something else? What was the £700 for 3-SW?

he never said tho he did call me a chicken and laughed when i turned up to him with no 3/4 iron in my first lesson.. LOL But am sure the set will included them as i never did have any problems hitting them it just the hybrid went further than a G2 3 iron HL

The price he gave me was it around 700 he was talking about tipping the irons and all this lark..

one of the club i was hitting in the end (after setup) was a normal 6 iron but it had a 4 iron tip or something on it.. And it felt good might i add, it went a mile. (not really but you get the point lol)

NOTE the link a added above is no good looking around all these forged irons look the same lol bar the brand names i cant tell the difference (sorry)

I will try and get him on the phone to find out the name again.

cheers

I think if I were you I would start shopping around. You have had your 1st experience of fitting but you still have alot of questions, maybe find out what other fitters are around you, tell them what you know so far and see if they can offer some more info/ another/some other options. It might also be an idea to set a budget so that you have a starting point. You seem to have found a shaft or two you like and that is alot of the work done already as the shaft it the king.

For me if your heart is set on forged there are only a few makes I would look at, Mizuno, Ping, Titleist and maybe Callaway, but that is just me.

Hendy, get your hands on a decent set of Titleists or whatever, but get the slightly used instead then get them custom fitted. You know what sort of shaft you need so shop from there.

BTW I dont see your name down for Ballyliffin ;)

Lol ballyliffen now there a course that will give every golfer a good test.

I see the link in your sig will get a look at it deff might be on for that.

Good idea on the titleists what kind of models would fit the bill tho? Looking around there seems to be a fair amount of them in the market.

Sounds a little like he's baffling you with technology and you are shelling out without actually knowing what you've bought. Lots of good repuatble names (i.e ones you've heard of) that offer a forged option with Mizzy arguably the main one in terms of product range from GI types up to pure blades. The MP 53 and 63 have a degree of forgiveness and off your handicap I think you'll need some help as you won't hit every one perfectly.

I think you can get much better fits in terms of the variety of heads and shafts and more discussion on what suits your game and swing and definitely get something to suit for less than £700

Sounds dear alright when he told me I think he knew that it was more than I be willing to shell out.

He does not come across as someone that would rip anyone off to be honest.

Must get a look at these AP2. Tho really thinking about the mx200 as I have tested them and of course they are very well priced.
