Fresh back from my first lesson on these shores, and what a difference. Having suggested we start with the basics to make sure the bad habits that are creeping in are ironed out, I have a new stance and a revised grip, and can already see the difference. Now hitting down on the ball and getting a better loft with improved distance, and with the revised grip, they're going generally straighter.

Due to look at a couple of things with the swing that need tweaking in a few weeks when I've had chance to bed the new things in but pleased with the comments that things look pretty good and there isn't much wrong!

To anyone still umming and arring over lessons, I couldn't recommend some highly enough!

Where were you before and did you ever have lessons? Remember it is a difficult process and the trick is not to give in to temptation if you hit bad shots and go back to old ways and habits. Stick with it and try and get plenty of range work in to make the new changes feel more natural. Well done and I agree that lessons are a good thing. There will be forummers on here that don't have them or believe in them and that is fine, but for me there are an essential part of my overall golf game.

First lesson was in Mauritius, and as far as giving me a grip to begin with and some basics to get me to a position I could hit the ball it was fine. The language barrier was a bit of an issue but I took enough away from it to practice. The follow up lesson back home should have been much sooner as it's clear bad habits have crept in.

We went over how the the changes will feel very alien and won't necassarily show results right away but I'm pleased they did. He gave me the option of having a look at my swing first as it would show immediate results (as it happens the changes have shown results, just need to get them to feel normal now) but I was happier to get the basics right as a solid grounding.

If i can just add marmar, try and take these lessons out on the course to practice them as well as the range.

i spend too much time on range mats working on my swing; and when i find myself on the real grass, with bunkers, trees, water etc thrown in, it can feel a bit alien.

Try to set aside a few hours on the course, pick a quiet day and play some holes, forget your score, just work on the new changes off the tee, down the fairway and into a green; more beneficial and productive than thumping a ball off a mat into a flat field.

My biggest regret was not taking more lessons earlier on. I still have bad habits that plague me and now I have a two year old son, lessons to fix me up are unlikely!

Well done for taking the plunge, keep them up and reap the rewards!

Cheers guys,

Will be venturing out on to a course last weekend in January with bro in law in Surrey. Will be the second time out on a course in my life so looking forward to it. First time felt a mile away from what I've experienced at the range so it's clear I need to spend time on a course as well as the range - just wish i had the time to get to one more often at the moment! When will those light nights come back!
