I joined up with two guys today, their first time on a course... EVER!
One had been to the range before but neither really knew how to hold a club. I was kind and offered to show them around, show them the grip and where to aim.
They were not to bad actually, they hit the ball OK (didnt miss it once all round) and eventually started putting well too. I introduced them to basic etiquette like where to put the bag, order of play, where to stand and how to keep good pace. They learnt quick and very eager to get it right, by the end they had it!
I didn't show them how to swing at all, they kept asking me which club though, I just said keep hitting the same one so you have a constant they both chose an 8. After a couple more holes they were hitting the fairway and leaving 40 yards, I said then to always hit a wedge. We got to the last few holes, two being almost 150 yards so they both hit 4h, greenside!
The MOST amazing bit was one finished PAR PAR!!! (he missed two birdies by inches after finding the green) I finished birdie bogey thanks to a trip into the pond
(I wasn't concentrating as they were a good laugh).
I did give them one putting tip after a few holes, slowly back a little and more through firmly, vary how far back to hit it different distances, instantly they were both decent putters! (it really was like night and day from the holes before.)
Throw in the small world story that one of them went to a wedding with the owner 4 years ago in Poland, hearing how much they drunk I wonder how they recognised each other...
Great gents, great guys, quick learners and keen to have good etiquette, in my mind ideal first timers! We certainly didn't hold the group up much once we got past the 4th hole and caught up the 4 ball in front.
They thanked me for my help and hoped we would see each other round the course again, I hope so as they were a lot of fun!
