playing my first round of the year tomorrow morning so went to the range to hit a bucket (50 balls).

I got a bit bored, little structure in what i was doing.
I did mix it a bit hitting 9 & 7 irons for 30 balls, aiming at flags and distance boards. I then hit 3 wood for 10 before chipping to the close target on the last 10.

Quality wise it was a mixed bag, maybe 60/40 good/bad.
Will get the putter out tonight for a while i think.

looking forward to tomorrow now, i had a bit of fear before swinging earlier.

Blimey, you're a late starter :-) I get withdrawal symptoms if I don't play through the winter but I suspect that just makes me slightly mad!

The range can get a bit boring can't it, I find it difficult to get any real feedback and allow myself to be a bit lapse on my qualification of a good shot. To try to get around this I tend to hit each shot as if I was playing a course shot by shot picking targets on the range and hitting the next ball with the club I think I would need if I was on the course. It's not perfect but mixes it up a little bit for me.

Enjoy your round tomorrow

I think I'm a bit odd, I just go for really good strikes, as long as the go roughly straight I'm happy. Great connecrion at the range is what I'm looking for.

Went to the practice area yesterday,i hit 50 wedges,50 8 irons,100 60 yrd chips,100 40 yrd chips,100 20 yrd chips around green and 50 bunker shots never got bored at all.I.M.O the more you put in the more you get out.

that's serious committment, just my cup of tea. Just getting going myself, popping to the practise ground on days off if I'm not on the course that is.

Keep up the good work! :)

i guess the boredom is through lack of feedback. On the short game area i'm fine as i get to see the result, and the reaction of the ball on the green etc. Hitting at targets on the range doesn't give me the feedback i'm looking for in terms of distance spin etc. Having said that, i have been known to hit 300 balls at a time if i'm working on something.

Now the days are longer i like to get out on the course and practice from specific distances where i can see the result on the green and get exact yardages.

Guess we're all different

I went to the range yesterday and hit 100 balls, the majority of which were draws/hooks...

I worked out that I had a problem after the first 20 balls, and got progressively more frustrated as I tried to fix it and found that I couldn't... (read more on my blog - link below)

So the range was good to identify a consistent problem, but until I have a session with the pro and get some advise, there's surely little point in burning through more buckets?

I normally play every week during the winter but due to the weather and the fact I was rebuilding my car engine I just didnt get out.
I also prefer the course (hitting real shots) rather than the range.

Anyway yesterday was good. I didnt set the heather alight by any means but there is a solid game there still after the break. A single birdie, handful of pars and bogeys and the odd oops.

A few rounds to losen the body and hone the touch, I will be ready to have a go at lowering the HC.

nice one. Always good to know there is still a game in there somewhere.

I'm looking at a couple of 9 holes this week then a club medal on saturday hoping to shave a few more points of the handicap. The following week got my 1st inter club comp. I haven't bothered with these the last few years as my game has been in a bad way but feeling pretty good about it now after my 1st ever club comp win a few weeks back so hopefully won't let the side down.

I love playing the inter-club matches. I don't normally get picked for any of the 1st team (or even 2nd team these days) games or things like the Daily Mail, Hillman Trophy etc). However we play a lot of inter-club games which whilst having a competitive edge are normally played in a very good spirit with a decent bit of tucker chucked in after. I always find them a good way of getting my face known a bit around the club, playing with guys I wouldn't normally get to go out with. Its also a good barometer for where my game is compared with other players (the handicaps normally range from high single to mid-20's).
