so, playing my first stableford on sat at Bath, my first card in since got my h/cap. i have looked at recent scores and usually 40-42 has won div 3. so i ask you knowledgeable people, how do i approach this game?
do i play my standard game and get around 36 points (hopefully) or take more risks than normal to try and nap a few extra points where I can. mainly looking to gain points on the par 5s really, and try par the easier par 4s and 3s.at my level im expecting more bogeys than par, but i want to get my h/cap down!!!
thoughts please.

Don't worry about getting your handicap down, just play a sensible game and you will do ok

If you can bogie every hole with a 27 handicap you are looking at 45 points.

Don't worry about lowering your handicap that will come with your game. Go out and play each hole as an individual unit. Don't worry about the full round. Mess up on one hole then forget about it and play the next one fresh.

If you think you can get par then go for it but play safe and go for solid options rather than the 1 in 5 birdie spectacular. Take a look at Rory in the Open. He played a bad tee shot then took his medicine played out to the fairway and took par. Had he gone for birdie we could have been seeing a different golfer take home the trophy on Sunday.

I shot 19 the other day playing of 21. Doesn't sound great but I only scored on 9 holes so all in all its wasn't actually as bad as I thought. Would have been much unhappier with 19 across 18.

No you scored 19 points over 18 holes not over nine.

attacking from you position id plot and play for bogey golf, if you have a par option then bonus. if you bogey the holes you get 2 shots on (SI 1-9) then you have dropped 9 off you hc and added 9points stableford wise.

Alright if you want to be pedantic ;)

But I'm sure you know what I meant.

I'd just play your normal game and let the score and the points take care of themselves. If you want to set targets try playing every hole as a par 5. What you lose on the long par 4's and the 5's you should get back on the shorter par 4's and the par 3's. That will give you 90 and off that handicap will take some beating
