First round since 2009

Well today I managed 18 holes for the first time since my op back in December 2009. I did manage the odd few holes last summer as well as some range sessions but got very tired and never attempted the full 18.

I got a call in the week from one of my old playing partners and it just so happened they needed a fourth for a friendly today so I decided to give it go.

Not surprisingly everything was pretty rusty and driving and short game were fairly dire but I did hit some good irons and managed to par 3 of the par 3's and got another couple of pars in as well.

My swing speed is way down and I need to take about 2 extra clubs but the important thing is I got round and I can still make a half decent attempt to play.

This means I should be fit enough for the Blackmoor meet which I am desperate to attend and I can hopefully get some scored rounds in to get my handicap re-activated.

All in all I'm pretty pleased and can't wait to get back out there again :)
 
That's good to hear Mashie, and 5 pars! Won't be long before you're back to normal. :)

Hope you don't mind me asking, but what was the op for? I seem to remember, in the back of my mind, reading your post about an op. It was a long time ago. :o

Thanks guys, yes I mustn't get too carried away and my legs are feeling it now. Probably won't be able to walk tomorrow.

Op was for cancer on my tongue (unusual and a bit of a surprise as I've never smoked). Had a big chunk cut out of my tongue and patched with a bit of my arm, which in turn they patched with a bit of skin from my leg. Amazing work. also had some lymph nodes taken out of my neck for testing.

Op didn't leave me too badly off to be honest but the cancer had spread to the lymph nodes in my neck. So I then had 6 weeks radio-therapy which really took it out of me and made eating or drinking almost impossible for about 2 months (I lost over 3 stone) and I still have a lot of difficulty eating. The radio burns the lining of the mouth and also destroys the saliva glands. It also really drains you and I just didn't seem to have any energy at all for months but recently I have been feeling a lot better and today proved it.

As I said in my introductory post last year, the forum was great while I was stuck at home as I could keep up with all the golf gossip and after a few months as a spectator I decided to join in. It's a great place with great characters which is why I'm so excited about getting down to Blackmoor.

I had thought my days as a serious golfer might be over but I definately feel now that needn't be the case.
 
Sounds like you've had a rough time, must be a great feeling to be back on the course :). I'm in a similar boat, hardly played for the last two years as I'm suffering from kidney failure and currently waiting for a kidney transplant. Hopefully if I get a kidney I will be able to really get back into it.

Hi Durango, I feel for you. 1 year out was bad enough let alone 2. Can get hard when others are playing and you can't, but hang in there and here's hoping that something turns up soon. By the way nice to see a Macgregor user. I'm a big Macgregor fan and sorry at their recent troubles. I hope now that they are with Golfsmith they can get back into the market. I got some vip V-foil forged cavities waiting for me when I get back to playing properly. The vip blades are the busniness though.

Homer, op was done at John Radcliffe and radio at RBH. I go to RBH for follow up and I recall you said you work there. I do look out for someone trying out new clubs or practising their swing in the corridors when I'm there. :D I also go to the range at Bird Hills and must arrange to meet up some time for a coffee and a gossip when the weather is warmer. I'd love a game at Ascot and would be happy to return the offer at my place (Sonning) over the summer. Maybe we could make a fourball with a couple of other local forummers. Our place is having a lot of work done at present and I don't think will be really ready til late summer but then it should be looking really good.
 
The macgregor blades are fantastic irons. I very nearly bought them soon after they came out for £500 but made a mistake and got a set of TaylorMade forged. Then saw a brand new set on golf bidder a couple of years later for £250 so snapped them up. Not used them as much as I'd like but are a pleasure to hit whenever I get the chance.

Hi Mashie, great news. Bet you were nervous at first, but must have felt fantastic when you finished the round. I had you down as a helper at Blackmoor, but more than happy to see you in the players category. :D

I work in recruitment and do all the hiring of the radiographers and nurses for the BCC and oncology wards so I know it well although I rarely get to go over there at the moment. Any time you fancy a game let me know. Hawkeye is a member at Ascot too so if you fancy grabbing a forum partner we could have a good match home and away.

You've obviously done a great job putting together the Radiography team as they were absolutely brilliant, especially at the end when the going gets really tough. Infallibly kind and patient.

Like the idea of a home and away match but I don't think there are any other forummers at my place. If I could bring a guest though that would be nice.

I'll PM you when I get into my stride a bit more and the weather gets a bit better. What a stinker today was.

Richart, still will be helping out at Blackmoor...helping everyone else avoid finishing last. :D
