Turns out the Saturday Stableford yesterday was a qualifier, which I only found out when I was standing on the first tee.

Played with a 5hcp I'd never met before, his mate (the other member of our 3ball) cried off as he didn't fancy the weather. Really nice bloke, thoroughly enjoyed his company.

Without a shadow of a doubt the windiest conditions I have ever played in, for example a par 3 that I have previously hit 6 iron into with no wind was a solid 5wood yesterday. Putting was very tricky, in fact standing still to putt was very tricky!!

Driving was much much better this week, hit 10 fairways out if 14, and hit 2 of 4 par 3's.

Started off steady enough with par, bogey, bogey, before a shocking blob on 4. A sandy par on 5 and another blob on 6 left me a couple of points behind, but a couple of pars got me back on track with 18 points at the turn.

Back nine started well with a par on 10, bogeys on 11, 12 and 13, par on 14, which left me a couple of points ahead of par with 4 to go. Bogeyed 15 to keep the run going.

The it went a bit pear shaped. 16 is a par 3, 165yd over bunkers, huge left to right wind. Hit 6 iron solidly, only to see it sail on the wind as soon as it got above the treeline, disappeared into the bushes right of the green. A long way right. Re-loaded and hit a 5 iron even more solidly, same result, although not so far right. No chance of finding either so another blob.

managed to scramble a bogey on 17 despite a dodgy drive, and salvaged a point on 18 with a 10 foot putt for a 6 after what can only be described as a shocker from tee to green via a bunker and a bush.

So a really promising position turned into another 35point finishing score, albeit in very challenging conditions. Not sure what to expect in terms of comp result and possible cut, although my playing partner Alan seemed to think I might be in with a shout of a place due to the wind.

Thoroughly enjoyed it nevertheless, the course (Wandlebury) was in brilliant nick despite the heavy rain on Friday, and my first qualifier under my belt.

CSS is Competition Scratch Score. It's what your performance is judged against for h/c purposes and can differ from SSS (Standard Scratch Score) depending on the performance of the players in a competition.

So when conditions are very difficult, like today, CSS may well go up and that means your 35 points could put you in with a chance of getting your h/c cut.

Even if it doesn't happen, 35 points in hard conditions is good scoring, particularly in your first qualifier and when playing with a low h/c stranger. Well played

Good scoring

Seems you integrating very nicely into Gog - great to see

Still jealous :D

Ah, I see, that makes sense, thanks for the info,

The comp results are normally published on monday for the saturday comps, so hopefully should find out tomorrow

Did you say you were playing in a pro-am at the Gogs later in the year?

I think it's not until the end of the year - it's going to be part of the Beds/Cambs winter series

Will find out on the 25th at JoG

Seems very early for a qualifier, given the weather we have had recently.

You may be a little surprised but I played my 14th qualifier of the year today on normal tees and greens in what felt like late April/early May. It seems to be my time of the year (had ESR last February) as I blistered 42 points, slightly disappointingly CSS was 37 points so lost only 1.5.

P.S. should have saved this round for KofK round at Woodhall Spa in 2 weeks time, but who cares.
