I played in a society event yesterday - the Christmas Cup - at Devils Dyke GC in Brighton. If you haven't played it, you should. It is probably the second best downland course in Sussex (after Worthing Lower) and is an excellent layout.

I heard yesterday that they had made their greenkeeper redundant a couple of months ago and this had translated in to the course being in superb condition with greens that were excellent for the time of year.

The course can be 5 or 6 shots harder depending on the direction and speed of the wind. Yesterday was about a force 5 but it was bright and very pleasant.

I wasn't expecting to play very well as I have only played once since October 4th but it turned out okay and I managed to get round in 2 over. I didn't think this would be enough to get in the prizes as I played off 4 so got 38 points which would normally be okay but in a field of 65, 45 of them were Dyke members and off winter tees, their swindles are often won with 40+ points.

As it turned out, the strong wind proved tough for the field and it was my day in the sun. I won the trophy (3rd time since 2004!) to finish an excellent 2011 in golfing terms. I thought better of accepting the very nice accompanying prize though (a really swanky Titleist bag) as I don't have an official handicap (incidentally, offered to play off 2 in this society next season after winning) and I would not be comfortable with this. This was auctioned off and the proceeds donated to a local charity.

A great day out on a really good course. Worth a visit if you have never been.

Cheers and merry Christmas.

well done, aint that the course the found a burnt dead body on this year

Surely the society has its own handicapping system in place ? ours has , they accept you as a member & your not a stranger to them as you won it before your very entitled to take your prize , Fair play for what you did that deservrs credit but the reasoning behind it is .. strange to me ..

No the society doesn't have it's own handicapping system, hence my offer to self cut to two for next year.

hence my offer to self cut .

Ohh no Snelly has gone all Emo on us!! :)

Nice shooting Snelly - great to finish with a win and while I think that you could have kept the bag without any problem its a very nice gesture to auction it off.

P.S. Congrats on hitting 1000 posts also :)

Well played Snelly, it's about time you joined Boars Head and got yourself a proper handicap :D

Have youself a good Chrimbo and best of luck for next year playing off 2 at all forum meets :D

Join a club, and get your handicap down to scratch Snelly. You know you want to.;) Happy Xmas and look forward to meeting up next year.

J1 and Richart,

I am ready to join a club now as my little boy is now showing a real interest in the game and can regularly hit a 100 yard ball at the range.

As soon as finances allow (this year I hope), I will give joining West Sussex a try although it's easier to get into Fort Knox! I am also thinking about the winter membershp offer at either Devils Dyke or Worthing. It is only about £350 and would get me a valid handicap again plus get me playing regularly for a change.

Either way, it won't be long until I do something on this front.

Hope you both had a cracking Christmas!

Snelly.

Done the same today with a win in the Boxing Day comp.

The cup we play for is a man I worked beside for 7 years and a great man he was too so it means a lot to me.

3 clubs and a putter and I took Driver,6 iron and 9 iron and we played in 40mph gales.

I produced shots that had me fuzzing at the bunghole,2 x drivers off the deck with 40 yard of fade to ten feet both times.....canny keep a good man doon.

56 gross,I take it they will frame my scorecard down at the club next to these run of the mill 67's......
I am off to the pub to get pished to celebrate.:whoo:

Great win Snelly and a nice gesture with the prize. As James said, time for a proper membership for someone of your ability - Boars Head or West Sussex - that spans the range of options!! Have a great New Year
