Have you ever seen or been involved in a fight on the golf course?

The reason I ask is that I was on the practice area today happily hitting balls when an out of control Collie dog came running out of nowhere onto the practice area. Collie dugs being collie dugs run about stupid, spin about and run and run. Anyway to cut a long story boring I managed to drop a full toss 8 iron right onto the dogs head just as the owner appeared. The stupid creature gave a yelp and ran off at which point I was subjected to a tirade of abuse.

I started towards the idiot who was abusing me as I was concerned about the stupid mut (I love dogs) when he decided to run at me telling me he was going to "F"ing kill me. At this point I decided to stand my ground and clutched my trusty 8 iron a little tighter.

A bit of a stand off ensued where words were exchanged as I tried to explain that he should have his dog under control on the practice area and that I didn't mean to skull his dog. Some people just don't really understand the dangers of a golf ball.

I was quite shaken after that and decided to call it a day 40 balls into my session and I even managed to resist the temptation to drill a 3 wood at knee hight after the moron. Hope the Collie dug is ok and doesn't have too big an egg or headache!

What a tool!

Hope the dog's fine too. If not - its not your fault, but the fault of the owner

Hit my dog with a 8 iron? I would have kicked off big time. I have an extreemly well trained springer spaniel but dogs being dogs he does something stupid now and then. the dog wasnt causing any harm. If you waited a few seconds you might have found the owner apologising to you.

Lucky escape Craw. You know only too well what people are capable of when they are behaving irrationally

You get that quite often when playing The Braids in Edinburgh. The local dog walkers think they have the right to roam anywhere and that there dogs can do what they want. Never hit anyone or their dog yet but had a few near misses when they just step out the gorse onto the fairway.

If the owner had been there I wouldn't have had any issues. The dog just ran about daft out of control. It shouldn't have been there - end of discussion. Some people shouldn't own dogs. Was I meant to stand and wait on a dog running around indefinitely? Ain't going to happen.

I'm pretty sure craw wasn't aiming at the dogs noggin...

Was the owner trying to get his dog off the practice ground at all? If so then agree with hovis that perhaps you could have waited. If not then poor dog for having an owner who clearly shouldn't be a dog owner!

Its not the dogs fault. Its the mindless owners. At the end of the day, yes that would be frustrating but hitting a dog with a metal stick is out of order. your lucky it wasnt an agressive guy otherwise you might be wearing an 8 iron. You was only practicing. Imo you should have found the owner and told him what a pillock he is not hit the dog dude!

I have had a few difficult moments in my time as a manager.
I think the scariest was when a young marshall came into my office and asked me to help him deal with a golfer.
The golfer was way out of order and not pleased to be ordered off the course. He was holding an iron and said he was going to cave my 'flipping' skull in. The young staff member was visibly shaking and I faced up to the golfer and told my marshall to take a good look at this guy and remember exactly what he said to me then jump in the buggy and ring the police. This seemed to have the desired effect and the guy ran off to his car.

On another occasion my HGK discovered garden rubbish that had been dumped over a fence onto the course. He picked it up and threw it back into the garden. The owner came to see me and got a flea in his ear. His parting shot [pun] was that he had a shotgun in his house and he was going to come back and shoot me. I commented that I hoped he had a licence for it as I shall be contacting the police to recommend it is revoked. He quickly about turned and started seariously begging me not to call the police.

Last one was a teenager taking pot shots at a golfer with an air gun. My staff covered all the exits from the house till the police arrived and caught two very scared [and stupid] home alone teenagers

I didn't hit the dog with the club you numpty. It was a full carry ball from 140 onto the dogs head.

I should also have made it clear the dog was running about for over two maybe longer minutes. It was picking up my balls and running away. It was running all over the shop, spinning, rolling in the grass etc. The mut was anywhere from 140 to over 300 yards away.

Numpty? I went to school mate. Dugs is actually spelt dogs and '' managed to drop a full toss 8 iron" english please. I thought toss ment your tossed your club i.e threw it.

Im a dog owner and theres nothing i hate more than owners who let dogs roam out of control where they shouldnt be. Its like parents who just let their kids run around all over the place. Dont go blaming other people when something bad happens because you cant be arsed to look after things properly!

It sounds to me like you showed great restraint. A lot of people would of probably wrapped that 8 iron round his skull.

It was obvious he didn't hit the dog with the actual club. And if you had 'kicked off' as you so kindly put it, then you would have been in the wrong as your dog should have been under control.

And when you tell others to use 'english', you need to get your own house in order. It's 'English' for starters and 'ment' is actually spelt 'meant'.

Up here its a Collie dug. Plain and simple.

Drop a ball on my dogs head from 140 and she'll think you're playing. Stupid owner if they are letting the dog run free, it could have escaped from a garden though. Those collies are seriously sneaky little blighters.

There's a course near me that let's sheep roam on the driving range. I refuse to use it, but plenty do, and appear to take great delight in aiming at the little fluffy animals.

You really going to pick me up for no capital "E" in english?
